Object in Road May Have Contributed to El Dorado Freeway Multiple-Vehicle Accident

A multiple-vehicle accident occurred on the El Dorado Freeway in Sacramento on June 27, and a fallen piece of wood may have contributed to it. The collision involved three vehicles and happened on eastbound U.S. 50 just east of the northbound 65th Street on-ramp around 1:35 p.m. Officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) arrived to find a large piece of wood in the number four lane.

Driver Injured in Three-Vehicle Accident After Car Struck by Piece of Wood

A Lexus driver reported that their vehicle was struck by the wood. Their vehicle showed major front-end damage, and the driver reportedly suffered head injuries. One vehicle overturned and landed on its wheels. No information was given on whether any of the parties involved in the crash received medical treatment at the scene or were taken to area hospitals. The CHP traffic accident investigators are determining fault in the crash and how it happened.

How Unsecured Cargo Can Lead to an Accident

Cargo that is not properly secured can lead to a number of dangerous consequences for both the driver and other vehicles on the road. Improperly secured cargo can shift in transit, leading to an unbalanced load distribution which could cause an accident. Not only can this create issues with balance and control, but it also poses a safety risk for those outside of the vehicle. Unsecured cargo can fly out from the vehicle, striking another car or person in its path and causing serious injuries or even death.

Unsecured Cargo Can Cause a Multiple-Vehicle Crash

In addition to this potential risk of injury, unsecured cargo can also damage other cars or property or even cause a multiple-vehicle crash. A shifting load can cause a car or truck to veer off its intended course and run into the side of a building or bridge, causing significant property damage. Even a small item like a toolbox or spare tire can become a dangerous projectile when not properly secured.

Injuries and Compensation After a Multiple-Vehicle Accident

Those who suffer injuries in a collision that was someone else’s fault have the right to recover compensation. When a personal injury claim is filed, the following may be recovered:

  • Any and all medical expenses that arose because of the multiple-vehicle accident are recoverable. This includes hospitalization, testing, surgeries, rehabilitative care and even out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Wages that the injured party lost from being unable to work can be recovered. If they become permanently disabled, wages until the age of retirement are recovered.
  • Pain and suffering means physical trauma but also includes emotional damage caused by the multiple-vehicle accident. A surprising number of people develop post-traumatic stress disorder, which requires treatment.
