Sacramento Multiple Big Rig Collision

A multiple big rig collision in Sacramento resulted in major injuries on July 23. The accident, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), happened at around 11:15 in the morning in the Natomas area along northbound Interstate 5 near Arena Boulevard. The CHP reported that three big rigs were involved in the accident, along with another unidentified vehicle. It was noted in the logbook maintained by the CHP that the driver of one semi was speeding and attempting to make an unsafe lane change before the collision. Major injuries were reported in the crash, and at least one person was transported to a hospital for further treatment. Tow trucks removed the vehicles from the accident site. The accident is under investigation by authorities to determine its cause and to assign fault.

Proving Negligence Following a Truck Accident

Truck accidents can occur with other truckers, motor vehicles, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians. The one thing they have in common is the injuries that occur in a big rig collision. When negligence is the cause, an experienced personal injury lawyer can help. In order to place a claim to cover the cost of medical care, time lost from work, and your pain and suffering, it first has to be proven that negligence caused your accident. This is where a lawyer steps in. First, the lawyer will examine the evidence in the police report to check for errors and talk to witnesses to the crash. Next, the lawyer will use technologies and experts to build a case. Crash reconstruction investigators will immediately head to the accident site to collect evidence that may have been missed. This can include tire marks that indicate whether or not the driver attempted to stop, swerved to try and avoid an accident and looking for other important information.

Areas Where Negligence Can Occur With a Big Rig

When a big rig is involved, some of the areas that will be checked include:

  • Reviewing the logbook to look for discrepancies that might indicate alteration can show negligence. If the driver or company falsify logs to make faster deliveries, it can lead to a big rig collision.
  • Checking the maintenance records to see if repairs were made can be valuable to an investigation. Maintenance that was skipped and repairs that needed to be made and weren’t can contribute to an accident.
  • Reviewing the truck driver’s records to look for past infractions or disciplinary measures is important. A record of infractions makes it more likely that a big rig collision will occur.
  • Going over company records for citations and other problems and complaints can help establish a record of negligence.
  • Driver error such as speeding contributes to many accidents such as what might have happened in the one above.
  • Fatigue is common in truckers because of the long hours they spend behind the wheel.
  • Drug use such as over-the-counter or prescription drugs may be used by some truckers to keep themselves awake and alert.

After proving negligence by the driver or company following a big rig collision, the lawyer can then negotiate on your behalf with the insurance company. If a fair agreement is not reached, the lawyer will then use this information to prove that negligence caused your injuries in civil court.
