Ruptured Kidney in a Traumatic Accident

Traumatic accidents can lead to a variety of injuries, and one of the most serious is a ruptured kidney. The kidneys play an important role in the body. They help to filter toxins out of the bloodstream so that they can be excreted from the body via the urinary tract. Damage to these organs could cause toxins to build up in the blood and could also result in the leakage of important proteins from the body. One of the ways that kidney damage could occur is through a rupture. Some of the reasons a kidney might rupture include:

  • Contracting a serious infection through a penetrating injury, such as a laceration
  • A blunt blow to the lower area of the abdomen leading to a rupture of the kidney capsule
  • A penetrating injury of the abdomen that injures the kidney directly
  • Physical assault or injuries sustained through contact sports

Whatever the cause might be, kidney damage requires the emergent attention of a trained medical professional. Internal bleeding and the buildup of toxins could occur quickly.

Signs and Symptoms of a Ruptured Kidney

The body has two kidneys. One is on each side of the lower abdomen. They are in a relatively exposed position, making them vulnerable to suffering a serious injury in a traumatic accident. Some of the signs and symptoms of a ruptured kidney include:

  • Intense, excruciating abdominal pain that is worst in the lower quadrants
  • Major bruising of the abdominal flanks
  • Pain that gets worse with urination
  • Foaming of the urine
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pain that gets worse with movement

All of these symptoms could be signs of a ruptured kidney, which requires emergency medical attention.

Treatment of a Ruptured Kidney: Emergency Surgical Repair

If the doctor is concerned that someone might have ruptured their kidney, pain control and imaging will come first. An ultrasound scan could reveal the ruptured kidney but more imaging, such as a CT scan or an MRI, might be needed. If the kidney has been ruptured, this could require emergency surgery. A trained abdominal surgeon will need to open the abdomen and stop the bleeding. If possible, the surgeon may try to repair the kidney. In other situations, the organ might need to be removed entirely. While people can live with one kidney, this is not an ideal situation. Long-term medical care might be required.
