Five Ways to Prevent a Car Accident

Car accidents can be scary, painful, and costly. Getting into a car accident can lead to injuries, financial struggles, and even emotional trauma. Auto accidents can be prevented, and you can reduce your risk of getting into a car collision on the road.

It is essential to know some of the leading causes of car crashes and how to prevent them. While some of these causes may be obvious, it is crucial to be reminded so you can be more aware of your surroundings.

  • Don’t Be Distracted – Making a phone call, texting, or eating while driving may not seem like a big deal. However, about 9 people are killed, and over 1000 people are injured each day in the United States in accidents involving a distracted driver.
  • Don’t Drive Drunk – We all know drunk driving is dangerous. Driving after drinking alcohol can slow down your reaction time and impair your judgment.
  • Don’t Speed – According to the National Highway and Traffic Administration (NHTSA), speeding causes nearly 10,000 fatal accidents each year. When you drive over the speed limit, you’re driving at a speed at which the road was not built. By speeding, you put yourself and others on the street in danger.
  • Don’t Tailgate – Following a vehicle too closely can cause you to rear-end the car. Follow the three-second rule if you’re not sure what an appropriate distance is to keep between you and the vehicle in front of you. According to the rule, you should always be three seconds behind the car in front of you.
  • Don’t Run Red Lights or Stop Signs – Always come to a complete stop and look both ways for oncoming vehicles. Those who run stop signs and red lights often risk causing side-impact and rollover collisions at high speeds.
