Roseville Man Killed in Accident Along Walerga Road

A head-on crash in Roseville on July 15 took the life of one man and left another with minor injuries. The collision occurred around 11 p.m. on southbound Walerga Road close to Town Center Avenue when the driver of a Chevrolet Corvette crossed over the center divider into oncoming traffic. According to the Auburn office of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Corvette collided with a Chevrolet Malibu, driven by a Roseville man, 31.

Driver Ejected From Vehicle in Head-On Crash

The Malibu collided with the sports car on the passenger side, which resulted in the Corvette driver, a Roseville man, age 68, being ejected. He died of his injuries and reportedly was not using a seat restraint at the time of the collision. The driver of the Malibu suffered minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. The Malibu driver was using a seat belt when the collision occurred.

Drunk Driving Suspected in Fatal Accident

The Placer County Coroner’s Office will release the deceased driver’s name after his family has been notified. Following the initial investigation into the cause of the accident, CHP said the alcohol consumption may have factored into why the head-on crash occurred.

The Dangers of a Head-On Crash

Of all the different types of traffic collisions, a head-on crash is at the top when it comes to dangerous accidents. The reason for this is that when two vehicles collide head-on, the speeds of both are combined upon impact. If the velocity of both vehicles is 65 mph, then they will collide at 130 mph. A frontal collision commonly occurs on highways, one-way streets and rural two-lane roads. Some of the reasons they happen include:

  • Intoxicated drivers: Drunk drivers represent a main cause of a head-on crash. Because a drunk motorist’s driving skills are reduced in a number of ways, it can cause a driver to head up an exit instead of an entrance ramp, which places them in the fast lane with other vehicles coming toward them. An injury attorney can assist you by obtaining evidence against the at-fault driver to hold them responsible for your injuries.
  • Distracted driving: Texting, talking on a cell phone, accessing GPS or changing a radio station can keep a motorist from realizing they have gone over the centerline and are now heading the wrong way in an opposing lane.
  • Improper passing: Improper passing is a common occurrence on two-lane rural roads. Attempting to pass when there is no clear view ahead or while on a hill can easily cause a head-on crash.
  • Fatigue: A driver who is struggling to stay awake or drops off to sleep while driving can slide over into an opposing lane and end up causing a serious accident.
  • Speeding: Driving too fast is dangerous at any time because the motorist can lose control of their vehicle. Speeding around a curve is especially dangerous.
