Rocklin Hit and Run Accident Leaves Woman in Serious Condition

I’m Ed Smith, a Rocklin car accident lawyer. A June 28 collision in Rocklin in the early afternoon resulted in major injuries to one woman. An SUV that fled the scene and may have caused the collision is being sought by authorities with the California Highway Patrol (CHP). They are asking anyone who might have seen the crash or what led to it to contact them with that information.

What Happened

The accident happened along northbound Highway 65 shortly before 2:00 in the afternoon near the exit ramp for Pleasant Grove Boulevard. It was reported by a witness that an SUV, white in color, swerved in the direction of a Nissan Altima. The driver of the Altima tried to evade a collision; however, lost control of the vehicle, which overturned and collided with a pole. The Altima driver was extricated from her vehicle and transported to Sutter Roseville Medical Center for treatment. The woman was reported to have suffered severe injuries in the crash.

Remaining at the Scene of an Accident

An officer with the CHP said that leaving the scene of an accident can result in worse consequences for the driver. The best thing to do when a driver causes or contributes to a collision is to pull over. Following the accident, one lane of the northbound side of the highway remained open. The rest of the road was expected to be cleared by 4:00 p.m.

California Hit and Run

California treats a hit and run accident very seriously, and leaving the scene of a collision can have considerable penalties. According to California Vehicle Code 20001, drivers who are involved in a collision are legally required to stop and offer assistance and exchange information. Leaving the scene even if a driver is not at fault is a serious offense, more so if anyone was injured or died as a result of the collision. Hit and run accidents that result in serious injuries can be considered a felony. Conviction of such a felony includes penalties of two to four years in prison, loss of drivers license, a large fine and more.

After a Hit and Run

If you or a loved one is involved in a hit and run accident, there are some things that you can do to help police locate the vehicle:

  • Notify the proper authorities right away. The sooner they know about the hit and run, the more likely they are to spot the car and detain the driver.
  • Give the police information on your exact location, including any signs you might have in view and the mile marker number.
  • Note the make and model of the vehicle as well as the color.
  • Take down the license plate number. Even if you only have time to jot down a few of the numbers or letters, it can help.
  • If you saw the driver, provide a description along with any details you remember such as clothing and tattoos.
  • Note identifying marks that may be present on the vehicle such as accident damage, scrapes, signs or window or bumper stickers.
