Single Vehicle Accident in Rio Linda Claims Driver’s Life

I’m Ed Smith, a Rio Linda car accident lawyer. A July 20 accident claimed the life of one man when his vehicle crashed into a tree along a wooded section of Q Street in Rio Linda. The accident occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. when a 22-year-old man’s older model Honda Odyssey minivan veered across the road and struck an oak tree, causing massive damage to the front driver’s side of the car. The California Highway Patrol (CHP), reported that there was no sign that the driver tried to apply brakes before the crash happened. Unfortunately, the man was declared deceased by personnel from Metro Fire at the scene. The driver’s name has not yet been released by authorities due to pending family notification.

I want to extend my prayers and sympathy to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In California, 57 percent of the fatalities that occurred in 2016 were due to single-vehicle collisions, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Some of the factors that can contribute to a single-vehicle crash are as follows:

  • Drunk driving is a common cause for all types of accidents. Alcohol consumption significantly reduces a driver’s ability to think clearly and react in an emergency.
  • Distracted driving such as texting or talking on a cell phone takes a driver’s eyes from the road. Even a momentary distraction can cause a collision. Other types of distracted driving include talking with passengers, changing a radio station or eating in the car.
  • Bad weather conditions such as rain, fog or snow can increase the likelihood of a single-vehicle collision.
  • Speeding is a major reason for single-vehicle accidents because a vehicle becomes more difficult to control at higher speeds, and it can go out of control in an emergency situation.
  • Drowsy driving is responsible for fewer accidents than many other causes. However, falling asleep at the wheel or daydreaming because of fatigue can lead to a collision.

Other Reasons for Single-Vehicle Accidents

Not all collisions involving one vehicle are due to driver error. Other outside influences that may cause a crash include:

  • Road defects such as cracks, upheavals and potholes can lead to an accident. When this happens, the government entity responsible for the maintenance of these roads can be held responsible.
  • Defective auto parts such as brakes, steering or accelerator can lead to an accident. In these cases, the manufacturer, mechanic or other entity in between may be held liable for injuries in a collision.
  • Road rage incidents or aggressive drivers can cause another motorist to crash their vehicle.

Obtaining Accident Compensation

When negligence by another person or entity causes an injury or loss of a loved one, an experienced personal injury lawyer may be able to help. By conducting their own investigation and compiling evidence to present a strong case, an injury lawyer can help you get the compensation you need and deserve.
