Rear-ended by Big Rig in West Sacramento
On many occasions I have been driving down the freeway when suddenly the cars in front me begin to slow. I begin to reduce my speed as well and check my rear view mirror to see that the cars behind me are also slowing down. I can only imagine how scary it would be to see a big rig in my rear view. A big rig who isn’t slowing down! Where would I go? What what I do? No time to make a decision — when suddenly — CRASH!!
A similar situation happened recently in West Sacramento. This accident happened on Tuesday, August 21, 2015 and involved a big rig truck with an empty tanker attached. The accident occurred right at commute time (5:15 pm) near the Reed Avenue exit along Interstate 80.
CHP said that calls started coming in around 5:30 pm with callers reporting a fiery scene as a big rig tanker truck had crashed with some other cars. Callers also reported the big rig was on fire.
A preliminary CHP investigation reveals that the driver of the big rig tanker truck did not slow down for the slowing traffic moving along Interstate 80 near Reed Avenue. The truck driver then crashed into a Ford F-150 pick up truck. The impact forced the truck onto the center divide and the pick-up truck overturned.
After crashing into the pick-up truck, the tanker truck driver continued EB and crashed into a Honda Civic which swerved and ended up in lane number 2. The Honda then crashed with a Chevy Cruze and it became wedged under the cab of the tanker truck. A passing SUV was also hit by the flying debris.
All in all, 5 vehicles were involved including the big rig tanker truck. The driver of the big rig had major injuries as did the driver of the overturned Ford F-150 pick-up. The driver of the second car involved complained of head and neck pain.
Needless to say, traffic was messed up for hours. The number 1 and 2 lanes were completely shut down until nearly 1:00 am in the morning while investigators did their thing. For more information see: http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/crime/article28066756.html.
