A Rare Penetrating Traumatic Brain Injury

Rare Penetrating Traumatic Brain Injury

I’m Ed Smith, a Personal Injury Lawyer in Sacramento. There has been a tremendous flow of research dollars into the area of brain injuries. This is mainly because these injuries have the potential to devastate patients and their family members. There was a time when injuries of the brain were thought to be permanent. In recent years, due to the development of improved diagnostic and treatment methods, many of these patients make a significant recovery. Some people even regain their baseline level of functioning. Unfortunately, these injuries still take a massive toll on families and the healthcare community as a whole. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that:

  • Traumatic brain injuries cost the United States healthcare system over $75 billion a year.
  • Over 1.5 million people suffer a traumatic brain injury yearly.
  • Children under the age of 4 are most likely to sustain a traumatic brain injury.
  • Elderly people over the age of 75 are the most likely to be hospitalized or pass away from a traumatic brain injury.

Even those who survive a traumatic brain injury often have long-term, chronic medical problems as a result of their injury. While certain types of traumatic brain injuries, such as concussions and contusions, are relatively common, rare traumatic accidents can still occur.

Case Report: A Rare Penetrating Traumatic Brain Injury

A group of doctors recently published a case report that discussed a young woman who sustained a penetrating traumatic brain injury while driving her car on the highway. She was following behind a truck when rocks started flying out from the back of the truck. A rock went through her windshield and struck her in the head. She lost control of her car and crashed. EMS was called to the scene, and she was taken to a nearby hospital. She had sustained a skull fracture. The rock was buried in her skull. However, the brain tissue underneath her head was intact, and fortunately, she made a full recovery.
