Placerville Resident Suffers Fatal Trauma in Pedestrian Crash

On Friday, December 18, 2020, a Placerville resident suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a vehicle on a local highway. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has reported that the crash occurred early at night and involved a single vehicle in addition to the pedestrian. El Dorado County officials have since identified the decedent as 57-year-old James Leon Covington. In addition to Covington, one other individual reportedly suffered injuries during the collision.

Crash Details

The crash happened at around 5:00 p.m. on the on-ramp leading from Missouri Flat Road to the eastbound side of Highway 50, around two miles to the southeast of Placerville. After conducting preliminary investigations, CHP reported that they suspect Covington was walking northbound on the highway when he was struck by a 1996 Toyota that had been traveling at around 40 miles per hour.

The accident was reported to CHP immediately, and dispatchers rushed response staff to the scene. At the crash site, El Dorado County Fire emergency responders discovered that Covington had been seriously hurt. Sadly, he was declared deceased before he could be transported to a hospital. Reports indicate that the driver sustained minor injuries during the crash. Whether or not the driver received hospital care was not reported.

Investigation

As CHP continues to conduct an investigation into this incident, officers have stated that they do not suspect either involved party to have been under the influence of intoxicants at the time of the crash. Frequently, pedestrian-involved collisions happen because of more than a single factor, which may include things not under pedestrian or driver control. Such factors can include malfunctioning or poorly built car parts as well as insufficient roadway safety for pedestrians.

Wrongful Death Damages

Losing somebody suddenly in a vehicle accident can be devastating. In many cases, people who’ve experienced such a traumatic loss go through an intense grieving process. During this time, many people feel overwhelmed by intense and even confusing emotions. In other cases, some may even have a hard time accepting what happened or feel like they are in a state of shock. While learning to cope with grief is hard, it is possible, and many find comfort through seeking support from friends and family.

However, recovering emotionally can be very difficult for families who’ve suffered financial damages due to fatal accidents. After losing a member of your household, you may have also lost access to expensive services or even your main source of income. Not only can this make it hard to pay for burial and funeral costs, but it may leave you unsure of how you can pay your bills.

In these cases, it’s important to reach out to a wrongful death lawyer and ask about what compensation may be available to you and your family. Often, those who’ve lost loved ones in accidents are able to obtain full compensation for their economic and non-economic losses.
