Pedestrian Struck by SUV in Eureka

I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka car accident lawyer. On November 1, 2017, a pedestrian in Eureka was hospitalized after being struck by an SUV at the Eureka Mall.

What Happened?

According to information reported by the Eureka Police Department (EPD), the collision occurred at around 4:05 p.m. An Isuzu Rodeo had reportedly been backing into a parking spot in front of a Subway in the Eureka Mall at 800 West Harris Street when the accident occurred. EPD indicated that a woman walking through the parking lot was positioned behind the SUV as it backed up. The male driver reportedly failed to notice the pedestrian and struck her.

Witnesses of the accident reported hearing a loud sound as the woman fell to the ground and hit her head on the asphalt.

Injury and Response

Humboldt Bay Fire and City Ambulance personnel both responded to the accident. Responders found that the woman had received significant traumatic injuries and transported her to a nearby hospital so that she could receive emergency medical treatment. Medical officials have not reported the specific nature of her injuries and updates on the woman’s condition have not yet been made available.

Authorities reported that the driver of the SUV and the female passenger found in the vehicle at the scene of the accident did not receive any injuries during the collision.

Pedestrian Accidents

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of over 5,376 pedestrians are fatally injured in vehicle collisions in the United States every year. This figure means an average 1.6 pedestrians deaths per hour across the country.

Additionally, more than 100,000 U.S. pedestrians are treated for non-fatal crash-related trauma in emergency centers each year. The CDC estimates that pedestrians are around 1.5 times more likely to be fatally injured by a vehicle accident than passenger vehicle occupants.

More Pedestrian Accident Stats

  • Pedestrians over the age of 65 account for about 19 percent of all pedestrian fatalities and an estimated 13 percent of all pedestrian injuries.
  • About one in every five children under the age of 15 who are fatally injured in car crashes are pedestrians.
  • Almost half of collisions that result in pedestrian deaths involve intoxication for either the driver or the pedestrian with one in three alcohol-related pedestrian crashes involving a drunk pedestrian and around 15 percent involving DUI.
  • Vehicles traveling at higher speeds tend to be involved in more pedestrian accidents than slower-moving vehicles. Additionally, accidents involving faster moving vehicles usually involve more serious injuries.
  • Most pedestrian accident deaths happen in urban, non-intersection locations during the night.
