Pedestrian Identified After Fatal Corning Crash

A local man who was fatally injured during a vehicle accident near Corning has been identified as William Montfort, a 79-year-old resident of Los Molinos. According to information from California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers, the accident involved Mr. Montfort and a passenger vehicle. Additionally, reports from local police officers state that the driver of the car has been arrested on charges related to driving under the influence, hit-and-run, and vehicular manslaughter.

I would like to send my deep sympathy to Mr. Montfort’s friends and family following this terrible collision.

Crash Details

CHP officers reported that Montfort had been walking with his bicycle in Los Molinos at about 9:50 p.m. on Monday, December 17, 2018. Montfort was crossing the intersection at Vina and Tehama Road only a few blocks away from his house when the accident took place. Montfort was struck by a 2003 Ford Excursion being driven by a 23-year-old Los Molinos resident. CHP stated that the Ford was traveling northbound on Highway 99 East in Los Molinos when it suddenly made an unsafe left-hand turn to enter Vina Road. While performing the turn, the Ford struck Montfort.

Emergency responders dispatched to the accident scene discovered Montfort in the roadway with severe injuries. Tragically, Montfort passed away before he could be placed in an ambulance and was declared dead on-site.

Hit-and-Run

The Ford immediately left the scene of the crash. However, the vehicle driver was located shortly after by CHP officers at a nearby trailer park. The man was placed under arrest and is currently in custody of the Tehama County Jail facing charges of felony DUI, hit-and-run resulting in fatal injury, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Records show that his bail is set at $325,000.

Recovering from a Fatal Accident

Learning that your loved one has passed away in a vehicle accident often causes an overwhelming wave of emotions and knowing that the crash was caused by a reckless driver can make it even more difficult to process these feelings. In these cases, it is normal for people to experience confusion, fear, anxiety, anger, sadness, and many different emotions that can make it hard to continue living your everyday life. On top of this, losing a family member or person, you depend on can cause serious financial issues. Many people don’t know how they will pay for funeral costs or are no longer able to afford to pay their bills after losing a family member.

While these issues can be overwhelming and taking time to recover emotionally is important, it is also important to contact a lawyer as soon as you can. Those who’ve lost their loved ones in preventable accidents can often file wrongful death claims in order to recover for their financial and emotional losses and the sooner that you have a Corning wrongful death lawyer on your side, the more likely it is that you will be able to claim the full amount of recompense that you deserve.
