Pedestrian Fatality Occurs on Sacramento Highway

Highway 50 Pedestrian Fatality Happens While Crossing From the Median

A pedestrian fatality was reported in Sacramento along westbound Highway 50 on the evening of November 17 when the walker was struck by several vehicles. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the pedestrian was trying to cross the highway when he was hit by two vehicles close to the area of Newton Booth near the exit for 26th Street at about 6:45 p.m. The walker was trying to run to the right-hand side of the highway from the center median when he was hit in the number two lane by a Toyota.

Pedestrian Struck by Two Vehicles Near 26th Street

Thrown by the initial collision, the pedestrian was again struck in the number three lane by a Honda. Both vehicles were moving along at around 65 mph at the time of the crash. Both the pedestrian and Toyota were found in the right-hand lane.

Drivers Remain at Accident Scene

The driver of the Honda exited 26th Street, but both drivers waited for authorities to come to the scene of the pedestrian fatality accident. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the accident scene by personnel with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. The name has not yet been released pending family notification by the County Coroner’s Office. Neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to factor into the cause of the crash, according to the CHP, and no arrests were made in the incident.

Negligent Drivers and a Pedestrian Fatality Accident

Common factors by motorists that can lead to the death of a pedestrian include:

  • Distractions: The risk of pedestrian fatalities increases when drivers are distracted by their cell phones, passengers or other sources. Inattentive drivers may not see pedestrians in the crosswalk in time to avoid an accident if they are not paying attention to the road.
  • Speed: Another major factor that can cause pedestrian fatalities is speeding. The faster the vehicle is traveling, the higher the risk of a pedestrian fatality accident.
  • Drunk driving: Pedestrian fatalities are also more likely to occur when drivers are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It may be more difficult for these drivers to avoid a crash if their judgment and reaction times are impaired.

Personal Injury Lawyers Can Help Families Recover Compensation

Nothing is worse than getting a call that a loved one has died in a pedestrian accident. The sudden loss is tough to cope with, but it is compounded by funeral costs, burial expenses and other financial burdens that can seriously impact the family. The family of a deceased loved one may be able to recover compensation for the loss suffered due to the negligence of the driver by filing a wrongful death claim.
