Pedestrian Killed in Accident at 24th Street Intersection

A pedestrian fatality occurred after an accident with a motor vehicle in Sacramento on February 15 along 24th Street. The accident happened where Kenworthy Way intersects with 24th just south of Meadowview Road. Officers with the Sacramento Police Department arrived at the accident scene as well as emergency responders with the Sacramento Fire Company, and the area was cordoned off to traffic while an investigation was conducted.

Walker Identified in Pedestrian Fatality

The injured pedestrian was transported to a local hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead at the medical facility. The person who died was identified as 38-year-old Michael Jeffrey Sims of Sacramento. The driver stayed at the scene and was cooperating with police, who said neither speed nor drinking was contributing factors in the accident. The intersection in question is not equipped with crosswalks or traffic lights. Sacramento police are conducting an investigation into the accident to determine how it happened.

Losing a Loved One

A sudden death in the family, such as a pedestrian fatality, is always difficult to face and leaves members in shock as well as with deep feelings of grief. The grief is compounded when the negligent actions of another person was responsible for the death. Family members are left knowing that they never got to say their goodbyes and can blame themselves, which compounds their grief. Placing a claim for wrongful death can help by seeking justice for their lost loved one. Family members and friends of the deceased can help in the following ways:

  • Help by running errands, mowing the lawn, or doing other tasks to take some of the burdens off of the grieving family.
  • Be a good listener. People get through the early stages of grief by talking about their loved one. A sympathetic ear can go a long way.
  • If you can’t be near the family because of distance, send a card or flowers. This lets them know you are thinking of them and their loss.
  • People who are heavily grieving may be less likely to eat properly. Taking over a casserole or ordering food to be delivered to the home can be helpful. Friends and other family members can also grocery shop for them by purchasing items easy to prepare.
  • Help with making funeral and burial arrangements. One of the most difficult chores the family or bereaved person has is making arrangements for their loved one. Having someone along with a clear head and ability to help can make that process easier for them.
  • Remember that everyone grieves differently, and you don’t know what goes on behind closed doors. Someone who doesn’t cry or seems distant is undoubtedly grieving in their own way. They need as much support from friends and family members as anyone else.
  • Don’t forget to contact and visit the grieving person or family after the funeral service. They will be overwhelmed with feelings of loneliness and perhaps depression. A listening ear and helpful family and friends can make their life’s transition easier.

Help From a Seasoned Lawyer in a Pedestrian Fatality

A pedestrian fatality can leave the family in a precarious position financially without the support the deceased provided. An experienced personal injury lawyer can help them get the compensation the family needs. We send out investigators to collect evidence to support the negligence claim right away. The investigators perform accident reconstruction, review the report by the police for errors and talk to eye-witnesses. In addition, they search for traffic and business surveillance cameras, which can be an important source of evidence. When the evidence is all gathered, our lawyers build a strong case in favor of our client, which can be used in civil court or while negotiating on their behalf with the insurance company.
