Pedestrian Accident Occurs at Watt Avenue Intersection

A North Highlands pedestrian accident resulted in a major injury in a collision with a motor vehicle on June 6. The crash occurred at the intersection of Watt Avenue and Winona Way near Dollar Tree around 5:40 a.m. The driver of the Dodge that struck the pedestrian reported that the walker jumped in front of the vehicle.

Unidentified Pedestrian Taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center

The driver reported that they had the green light when the accident occurred. When California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers arrived, they discovered what appeared to be a homeless male lying in the traffic lanes. Emergency personnel with the Sacramento Fire Department arrived at the scene and determined the male had suffered major injuries in the collision, and he was transported as a John Doe to Mercy San Juan Medical Center for treatment. An investigation of the incident is underway by the CHP traffic collision unit.

Causes of a Pedestrian Accident

There has been an increase in accidents involving pedestrians over the past few years. This increase is attributed to several common causes, including:

  • Visibility: Pedestrians are becoming less visible to drivers as more SUVs and big trucks share the road.
  • Speed: Speeding often results in pedestrian injuries. In situations where a driver struggles to stop due to speed, pedestrians are much more likely to be struck.
  • Distractions: It is now more common than ever for distracted drivers to cause accidents. Cell phones, texts, radios, and other devices may be used by the driver in this situation.
  • Impairment: Alcohol plays a significant role in many pedestrian collisions. A driver who is impaired cannot control their vehicle and loses the ability to think clearly.

Injuries Sustained by Pedestrians in Accidents

In a pedestrian accident, the following injuries are common:

  • Cervical strain or sprain: The cervical spine gets strained or sprained during an accident, which causes a soft tissue injury called whiplash. The pain from a cervical sprain can last for months or even years.
  • Head and brain trauma: A person’s life can be devastated by brain and head injuries. In cases of traumatic brain injuries like hematomas, surgery may be required. Permanent damage occurs in some head and brain injuries.
  • Bone fractures: People who are on foot are more likely to suffer broken bones in an accident. It can be a simple break or a compound fracture. Compound fractures occur when bones puncture the skin.

The Investigation of Pedestrian Accidents

Collisions with pedestrians must be investigated to determine the cause. Upon arriving at the crash scene, our investigators gather evidence of negligence. Finding clues about what caused the accident and how it occurred is one of the tasks involved in investigating the accident scene. Interviewing witnesses, obtaining videos from nearby surveillance cameras, and reconstructing the accident are all part of the investigation. We pass all the information gathered by our investigators along to our lawyers so they can build a strong case.
