Arden Way Injury Accident Reported at Starbucks Parking Lot

A parking lot accident in Sacramento on March 14 caused an injury when two vehicles collided. The collision was reported around 1:00 in the afternoon in the Starbucks parking lot at Arden Way and Howe Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a Jeep Liberty and Lexus crashed while in the drive-through. An injury was reported in one person. No further details were provided.

Parking Lot Accidents

Even low-speed accidents can result in serious injuries. Most of them are caused in parking lots or at intersections and involve a rear-end crash. According to a report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a change in speed right before impact increases the risk of injuries. Around 91,000 people each year suffer injuries in parking lot accidents, including:

  • Broken bones: Many broken bones that involve simple breaks heal in around six weeks. However, an open fracture such as one involving the femur can also cause damage to the tendons, ligaments, and muscles. This is not only complex but can lead to infection, so the timeline for healing can be much longer and require surgical intervention.
  • Head injuries: Traumatic brain injuries can vary from concussion to hemorrhage or other serious conditions. While a concussion can heal in several weeks, a more serious injury can cause life-long disability or even lead to death.
  • Crush injuries: Crush injuries in a motor vehicle accident often involve the legs and feet when those parts of the body become trapped against the dash, steering wheel, or around the foot pedals. Nerve damage, fractures, and blood loss can occur in a crush injury with traumatic damage to the blood vessels, muscles, and bones. The most severe crush injuries may result in necessary amputation.
  • Abdominal trauma: The force of impact in a collision can cause damage to organs and result in internal bleeding, which is an emergency situation.
  • Head and neck trauma: Probably the most common injury following a low-speed crash is cervical sprain or strain. Although this might sound like a minor condition, its common name being whiplash, it can cause pain and problems with movement for a long time.

Parking Lot Accident Investigations

For an injured party to claim compensation from an at-fault driver, evidence has to be gathered to prove negligence. Over the years my law office has been operating, we’ve done just that many times, thanks to our experienced accident investigators. The following are examples of areas that are investigated to acquire evidence:

  • The investigators perform accident reconstruction, which shows the positioning of each vehicle or person and how the collision occurred. It often points toward fault and is widely used both by the court and insurance companies.
  • The police report is reviewed to look for mistakes, and witnesses to the parking lot accident are interviewed. Corroborative statements by witnesses help strengthen the case for compensation for an injured client.
  • The investigators look for surveillance cameras in the area. They may be located at traffic lights or businesses. The capture of an accident on video provides strong evidence to support a client’s injury claim.
  • Company negligence: A company that provides poor spacing for vehicles to park, inadequate lighting, and other inadequacies may be the cause of an accident. In these cases, the company may be held responsible through a premises liability lawsuit.
