Multiple-Vehicle Accident on U.S. 50 Causes Traffic Woes

An overturned SUV on eastbound U.S. 50 on April 28 caused an injury following a multiple-vehicle crash. The collision occurred around 3:15 in the afternoon just west of the southbound State Route 99 connector. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) incident report said the accident blocked the slow lane and involved three vehicles.

A GMC Envoy involved in the collision overturned. Several of the vehicles had to be towed from the scene, including a Volvo and the GMC. No additional information was provided on the injury suffered by one party involved in the crash. An investigation is underway by the CHP to determine the accident’s cause. It usually takes a couple of weeks to get a copy of the CHP traffic report.

Causes of a Rollover Collision

Some vehicles are more apt to experience a rollover than others, such as SUVs, light trucks, and vans. The reason they roll over more easily is that they have a higher center of gravity. However, given the right situation, any vehicle can experience a rollover.

This is important because a rollover causes some of the worst injuries found in traffic accidents. After the airbags deploy, they deflate, which offers no further protection to those inside the vehicle. Some of the main reasons for an overturned SUV include:

  • A driver taking a curve at too high a speed can result in an overturned SUV.
  • Being struck by another car can end up resulting in an overturned SUV.
  • A fatigued driver who falls asleep at the wheel can awaken suddenly and overcorrect, which results in the vehicle rolling over.
  • Running into a curb or going off the roadway onto a soft shoulder can cause an overturned vehicle.
  • Swerving to miss an object that has fallen into the roadway can result in a rollover.
  • Distracted driving such as talking on a cell phone or texting, which takes the driver’s eyes from the roadway, can result in an overturned SUV as it leaves its lane or drifts to the side.
  • Being intoxicated or on drugs can result in an overturned SUV because the driver is incapable of properly handling the car.

Turning to an Experienced Law Firm

Over the years, we have successfully handled many such cases to obtain compensation for our clients who’ve been injured by another’s negligence. By investigating the crash, we can uncover the evidence needed to support our client’s compensation claim. In this way, they can recover damages to cover their medical bills, lost wages and reimburse them for their pain and suffering.

Additional Risks of an Overturned SUV

Not only do the occupants inside an overturned SUV face the risk of traumatic injuries, but some vehicles experience roof crush. This occurs when the support structure isn’t strong enough to keep the top of the vehicle from caving in. Traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, and bone fractures are common in roof crush.

Manufacturers of automobiles are required to construct vehicles with enough support strength to avoid roof crush. However, this isn’t always the case. When this happens, the manufacturer, designer, and others can be held financially liable through a product liability lawsuit. This is why it is vital to retain the damaged vehicle after an accident. In this way, it can be checked by engineers to determine if the manufacturer was negligent.
