Oroville Man Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident

During the early morning hours of  Saturday, January 28, 2017, a bicyclist was involved in a hit-and-run accident on the Olive Highway in Oroville.

What Happened

A 65-year-old man from Oroville was riding a bicycle on the Olive Highway at approximately 2:20 a.m. when for unknown reasons a vehicle struck him from behind. The driver fled the scene following the collision traveling eastbound on Highway 162.

Were There Injuries

The bicyclist was thrown off of his bicycle due to the impact of the collision. When first responders arrived on scene they discovered the man had suffered traumatic injuries in this hit-and-run collision. The man passed away a short while later due to his injuries. The man’s identity has not yet been released.

Ongoing Investigation

The Oroville Police Department has collected statements from those who witnessed this tragic accident and are looking for a light-colored, or white full-sized SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Suburban or Tahoe. The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed following the accident and appeared to have a damaged front headlight. No description of the driver has been made available. Due to the suspect fleeing the scene, the Oroville Police Department is asking anyone who witnessed the accident to please call them at (530) 538-2448.

Some common reasons that drivers flee the scene of an accident are:

Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage

Most insurance policies have uninsured motorist coverage. This type of insurance can cover pedestrians or bicyclists who get injured by a hit and run driver. If the hurt person had a policy of auto insurance, he or she also has uninsured motorist coverage in California unless they signed a written waiver.

Anyone Living in the Household

Even if another person living in the home owned an auto where an injured person lives, uninsured motorist coverage will usually extend to anyone living in the same residence. Call an experienced car accident lawyer for more information.
