Ojai 2017 Mountains to Beach Marathon

The 2017 Mountains to Beach Marathon is scheduled to start at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 28, in Ojai, so runners will have a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and get exercise while donating to worthy charities. I would like to extend my congratulations to the participants and sponsors for participating in such a worthy event and hope that everyone has a great day and stays safe. There will be lots of extra pedestrians in the area on the day of the marathon. Motorists should take special care to drive safely and keep an eye out for runners.

2017 Mountains to Beach Marathon Course

The course starts in Ojai’s downtown area, heads out toward Meiner’s Oak, and makes a loop back to Ojai, a distance of around six miles. Then it goes along the bike path by the Ventura River and heads to Santa Ana Boulevard. Leaving civilization, the runners head along this rural road to Ventura. There the runners again use the bike path through a tour of the downtown area, make one last turn and arrive at Ventura Beach. Heading along the beach, the runners arrive at the finish to enjoy the celebration at the end. The total distance is 26.2 miles but will be worth every minute for the incredible views along the way and spectacular coastline.

Running the Half Marathon

The half marathon is going to be run at a fast clip and is 13.1 miles long. Shuttles will be taking runners to the starting line where they will head north toward Ojai along a bike path and local streets to head toward Ventura along the west side valley and oceanfront.

Running Safely

According to a survey by Runner’s World, almost 20 runners were killed by motor vehicles between January and October 2009, and 40 died since 2004. Responses to a survey also reported that out of 2,400 runners, 138 said that they had been struck by a vehicle while out for a run. Two reported that they nearly died.

Runner Injuries Caused by Motor Vehicles

While the odds may be in a runner’s favor, accidents do happen and can result in serious injuries or death. A runner who has been struck by a vehicle may face debilitating injuries such as broken bones, spinal cord injuries, head trauma, and limb amputations. Reliving the accident itself may lead to emotional symptoms of distress like sleepless nights, nightmares, depression, anxiety, and other symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
