Natural Remedies for Pain Relief

Painkillers and other prescribed drugs can leave you with unbearable side effects that affect your day-to-day life. To make matters worse, painkillers can be incredibly addictive and leave chronic pain patients feeling dependent on them to get through the day. More and more people are switching to natural remedies for pain relief, whether it be physical or emotional pain that you’re experiencing. There are too many natural alternatives for pain relief to name here, but below you can find a brief handful of remedies that have been proven to increase physical and emotional health.

Cocoa, the primary ingredient of chocolate, has many health benefits ranging from antioxidant power to mood enhancement. Additionally, chocolate is among the many foods that contain powerful properties known to reduce pain. Just like cherries, olive oil, and coffee, chocolate has anti-inflammatory properties. In one study, chocolate was found to decrease swelling and increase blood flow, which can reduce bodily pain. Other studies have revealed that chocolate can reduce heart disease as well as help you sleep better. How does chocolate impact our physiological state? Eating chocolate releases endorphins, increases serotonin levels, and connects to the cannabinoid receptors in the brain.

Cat Therapy

The point of cat therapy is to show that the company of furry felines can lead to increased psychological and physical health. Cat therapy, which is still a rather new trend, has been used to treat people suffering from depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, cats are not just shown to help people suffering from mental health problems. Multiple studies that looked at people with heart disease revealed that the patients showed noticeable improvements after living with a cat. Getting a cat is also commonly recommended to those that are suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia, as petting a cat can sometimes help with memory. When cats purr, specific nerve endings are stimulated that aid in memory retrieval. In other words, cats can actually help stall the neuronal degeneration of their disease.

Healing Touch Therapy

Healing touch is an ancient practice that emphasizes the art of energy-based medicine. It has been used in regions around the world, such as Africa and China. On a fundamental level, healing touch is an integrative medicine approach that focuses on the power of physical touch. Our hands can be used to re-energize, center, and balance any body regions that are in pain. Maybe you have not directly heard of healing touch therapy, but it is an approach that has been modified in more common practices such as massage therapy, Reiki, and acupuncture. Healing touch takes a holistic approach to our well-being, as it considers an individual’s energy system and how it relates to our sense of physical, spiritual, and emotional wholeness.
