Multiple Fatalities Reported in Vineyard Road Single-Vehicle Car Accident

A car accident just outside of Roseville during the early hours of May 28 caused the deaths of three people. The collision happened at about 1:50 a.m. along Vineyard Road westbound, close to Cook Riolo Road. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) report on the incident said the BMW hit a power pole when the driver lost control, which caused the vehicle to roll multiple times.

Three People Die at Car Accident Scene

Emergency responders with the Placer County Fire Department declared the three occupants deceased at the accident scene. It is unknown at this time whether alcohol or drugs factored into the fatal crash. A CHP traffic accident investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collision.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office has recently identified the decedents: Lane Castro, age 21, Lucas Braner, age 21, and Zachary Brown, age 21, all residents of Roseville.

When a Loved One Dies, How Can You Recover Compensation?

In a fatal car accident caused by someone else’s negligence, losing a loved one is a challenging experience. Survivors of a deceased loved one may be able to bring a wrongful death lawsuit in California to recover financial compensation for their loss. Placing a claim holds the at-fault party responsible and can help give surviving family members a sense of justice for their personal loss.

In California, a claim for wrongful death can be brought by the surviving spouse and children of the decedent or other family members if the deceased had no immediate family. In addition to car accidents, product liability and other types of negligence can cause wrongful deaths.

Proof of Negligence in a Wrongful Death

There are specific requirements that must be met in order to file a wrongful death claim in California:

  • A duty of care was owed by the negligent party to the individual who died.
  • That duty was breached when the accident occurred.
  • Negligence by the at-fault party caused or contributed to the death.
  • The survivors have suffered damages as a result of the death of the family member.

Recoverable Damages in Wrongful Death Cases

A variety of damages may be recoverable for the surviving family members if the above requirements are met, including:

  • The cost of the funeral and burial
  • Financial support the decedent contributed to the family, which is recoverable until the normal age of retirement
  • Companionship, love and consortium are all lost by the spouse
  • The children’s loss of their parent’s love, affection and guidance
  • Exceptionally egregious negligence may merit punitive damages
