Man Killed in Accident Involving Large Truck Near Arvin

A 34-year-old motorcyclist suffered fatal injuries after colliding with a semi-truck on Sunday, December 4, 2022. The accident occurred around noon at South Edison Road and Bear Mountain Boulevard near Arvin in Kern County.

Details of the Arvin Fatal Accident

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the motorcyclist was traveling on Bear Mountain Boulevard and approaching traffic near the intersection. Meanwhile, the semi-truck was turning left onto South Edison Road. Officials said the motorcycle rider crashed into the semi-truck while trying to pass traffic on the left.

The Kern County Fire Department paramedics responded to the accident and provided medical treatment. However, the motorcyclist died due to severe injuries. The CHP said the use of drugs and alcohol is unknown at this time. The accident is still under investigation.

Accidents Between a Large Truck and Other Vehicles

Accidents caused by commercial trucks are traumatic and overwhelming. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), 18-wheelers weigh an average of 80,000 pounds. The difference in size and weight between a commercial truck and a passenger vehicle is so enormous that when a semi hits a smaller car, the occupants in the passenger vehicle are at a greater risk of sustaining catastrophic bodily injuries.

Truck Accident Statistics

According to data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCA),

  • More than 5,000 large trucks and buses were involved in fatal accidents in 2018.
  • One in ten deadly traffic accidents involves a commercial truck.
  • In deaths arising from crashes with big rigs, those in smaller vehicles died or sustained catastrophic injuries in almost all of the accidents.

These statistics show that large truck accidents often happen and usually involve serious injuries or untimely deaths.

Types of Injuries in Truck Accidents

Those who survive a severe truck accident typically face a long and painful road to recovery. Some common injuries sustained in a trucking crash include the following:

Recoverable Damages in a Wrongful Death Case

If you decide to move forward with a wrongful death claim, you can recover for the following damages:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical expenses
  • Lost income
  • Loss of guidance
  • Loss of companionship
  • Pain and suffering
