Motorcycle Handlebar Injury

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Motorcycle Accident Lawyer. When people are learning how to ride a bicycle, they are told to wear a helmet and proper padding. This is even more important when it comes to riding a motorcycle. Because a motorcycle lacks the metal frame of a car, the risk of injury is significantly higher. Some of the critical statistics related to motorcycle accidents include:

  • Over 100,000 motorcyclists were involved in a crash in 2012.
  • 60 out of every 100,000 motorcyclists involved in an accident died from their injuries.
  • This pales in comparison to 14 out of 100,000 passenger cars.
  • Those who ride motorcycles are five times more likely to sustain an injury in an accident when compared to a passenger car.

Clearly, serious injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident are a significant issue. Numerous safety precautions can be taken to prevent serious injuries from occurring in a motorcycle accident. Some of the safety tips include:

  • Wearing a helmet.
  • Using the proper safety equipment.
  • Not riding during poor weather.
  • Staying away from slick roads, including water and ice.

Unfortunately, injuries can still take place in a motorcycle accident. The types of injuries sustained in a crash depend heavily on the mechanism behind the crash. Recently, a case report was published discussing a rare affliction that a rider suffered following an accident. His injury, hospital course, and treatment were chronicled for the education of motorcyclists and the medical community alike.

A Case Report: Motorcycle Handlebar Injury

A recent case report described a severe motorcycle accident that took place on the interstate. A young rider was traveling down a highway when he was forced to stop short. His motorcycle collided with an object and he flipped over the handlebars. Fortunately, his helmet protected him against sustaining a traumatic brain injury. Because of the high speed of the accident and the serious nature of the collision, emergency medical personnel were called to the scene. The young man was evaluated and quickly taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. He was complaining of severe abdominal pain, which was corroborated by significant bruising. He was taken to the radiology suite and scanned. The tests demonstrated that he had ruptured his pancreas and developed an abdominal hernia. When the young man flipped over the handlebars, they impacted his abdomen. The force of the handlebars against the middle of his torso ripped his abdominal muscles and his pancreas, leading to this severe injury. He was taken to the operating room so that the damage could be repaired. He spent several days in the hospital before being released for rehabilitation. Fortunately, the young man made a full recovery.
