Modesto Motorcycle Accident Seriously Injures Hilmar Man

I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto motorcycle accident lawyer. A motorcycle accident in the evening hours caused a 52-year-old Hilmar man to suffer major injuries on May 19, 2018. The accident occurred east of Modesto where the Hilmar man was riding his 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle southbound along Albers Road in the vicinity of Dusty Lane at approximately 6:10 p.m. For unknown reasons, the Hilmar man reportedly allowed his motorcycle to veer over the double yellow lines and enter the northbound lane in the path of a 2017 Chevrolet. The front of the motorcycle struck the left side of the Chevrolet, causing the rider to be ejected off the bike. The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Motorcycle Accidents

In 2015, California was announced to be the leading nation with the highest number of registered motorcycles at 828,883. With so many bikes in the state, it isn’t surprising that motorcycle injuries and accidents are common. The probability of a motorcycle rider passing away in a collision is nearly twenty-seven times higher than that of a passenger vehicle driver and six times as likely to suffer injuries.

Wear Proper Motorcycle Protection

Using appropriate protective gear is important when riding a motorcycle. Wearing a standard issue helmet is critical in reducing your risk of sustaining a head injury in case of a motor vehicle accident or unexpected fall. Be sure to select a helmet wisely as one that does not fit properly will not perform as intended. The upper and lower extremities should be completely covered while riding, ideally by wearing heavy denim or leather. Protective gear not only protects the arms and legs from injuries but also reduces the risk of dehydration.

Motorcycle Maintenance

Inspecting your motorcycle before every ride is important. You can do so by checking the fluid levels, headlights and signal indicators, tire tread and pressure and hand and foot brakes. Regularly washing your bike is also useful in preventing soot and debris from entering the engine. Another good habit to break in is to keep an eye on any signs of fluid leaks, such as gas or oil leaks, under your motorcycle as they may lead to mechanical failures or even an accident.

Riding Your Motorcycle Responsibly

Practicing safe motorcycle riding can help minimize the number of traffic accidents on the road. Below are some tips on how to ride your motorcycle safely:

  • Always check behind you and signal before changing lanes
  • Avoid drinking and driving as riders who have been consuming alcohol are at a forty percent higher risk of crashing
  • Exercise additional caution when traveling in the blind spot of a car
  • Obey posted speed limits, traffic lights, lane markings and other signs
  • Reduce your speed on curves
  • Remain vigilant of your surroundings
  • Wear bright-colored clothing, preferably with reflective material
