Mesothelioma Lawyer – El Dorado Hills

I’m Ed Smith, an El Dorado Hills Mesothelioma attorney. El Dorado Hills in California remains home to some of the highest levels of asbestos in the world. In fact, the EPA even studied the amounts of asbestos surrounding the El Dorado Hills area. Around 10 years ago, the EPA conducted a study on over 400 air samples and close to 200 soil samples. The results of this study were disturbing for anyone, especially people living in the area. Almost every single sample the EPA collected contained asbestos. These samples were collected from everywhere; baseball fields, playgrounds, local parks, sandboxes, and even the soil along bike paths.

Where Did All of this Come From?

This is the question that many of the residents in El Dorado Hills keep asking themselves. Why does this area seem to have so much asbestos? The fact remains that asbestos occurs naturally in the environment. The mountains in the regions of California happen to contain a significant amount of asbestos in them. All of the excavations over the years have helped to release this asbestos into the air. This dates all the way back to the gold rush of the 1840s and has continued with the construction and development in the zone today. Every time that buildings are built in the mountains or tunnels are made through the mountains, a significant amount of asbestos is released into the air. The asbestos then settles into the soil, explaining the terrifying results that the EPA found.

Does Asbestos Exposure Guarantee that I will Develop Mesothelioma?

The big question that everyone wants to know is whether or not asbestos exposure guarantees the development of mesothelioma. The answer is no. Asbestos alone does increase the risk of mesothelioma development; however, the chances of disease development depend on several factors including:

  • The exact level of asbestos in the air
  • How often the person was exposed to asbestos
  • How long it has been since the last asbestos exposure
  • How old the person was when they were exposed to asbestos

Asbestos Exposure is More Worrisome for Children

The crux of the matter is that asbestos causes DNA damage to the cells that line the mesothelium. When the DNA is damaged, cells start to proliferate out of control. This is what doctors call cancer. The younger someone is when they are exposed to asbestos, the longer the amount of time they have to live with this DNA damage. This increases the chances that someone will development mesothelioma over the course of their life because they have more years in which to develop this cancer. This is why asbestos exposure in children is so dangerous. They have to live their entire lives with this asbestos exposure and have a greater chance to develop cancer.

The Legal Rights Regarding Asbestos Exposure and Mesothelioma Development

Many people in the El Dorado Hills area have been wrongfully exposed to asbestos. They have suffered, their families have suffered, and the development of mesothelioma has had a significant impact on their quality of life.
