Man Killed in August 2 Hit and Run Crash Identified

A man who died in a hit and run crash in Sacramento on August 2 has been identified. The Sacramento Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased man as Newton Dompey, age 63, and a resident of Elk Grove. The accident occurred at 1150 Arden Way, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP) records. It was unclear in the report whether Dompey was in a separate vehicle or if he was on foot at the time of the collision. Emergency rescuers were called to the scene of the hit and run crash where it was determined that Dompey’s injuries were life-threatening. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he passed away the following day. I would like to extend my sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased.

What an Attorney Can Do to Help

A wrongful death can have devastating effects on a family. Suddenly, a loved one is torn away without the chance to say goodbye. When the death was caused by the recklessness of another person, it can wreak havoc on family members emotionally. It is important for the family to grieve without having to deal with an insurance company or monetary worry. That is where the insight of a personal injury lawyer is helpful. Our trained investigators are dispatched to the scene of the accident to determine exactly how the fatality happened. We scour the area for evidence that can be used to help identify a fleeing driver. We obtain video footage of the crash from traffic cameras and nearby businesses and interview witnesses to the accident. Our investigators also carefully review police reports for accuracy. Once this information is gathered, our legal team uses it to build a strong case against the at-fault party once he or she is apprehended. It is critical to call us as soon as possible before evidence is lost or covered up, particularly in a hit and run accident.

Confusion at the Scene of an Accident

In the aftermath of a hit and run crash, details are often confusing. This is particularly true in an intersection accident where many people and vehicles interact. Witnesses can be of invaluable assistance in sorting out what happened. Reconstruction of the accident is another way to get a true picture of the crash.

What Is a Wrongful Death Lawsuit?

Wrongful death claims are a type of lawsuit that is filed when a loved one is killed by the negligent or intentional actions of another person. The lawsuit is filed against the individual who caused the person’s demise. In order to file, the plaintiffs must prove that negligence was involved. To do this, it must be shown that a duty of care was owed by the offender toward the deceased and was not fulfilled. Further, it must be shown that the defendant’s behavior was responsible for the person’s demise, and specific financial damages resulted from it.

Damages in a Wrongful Death Lawsuit

Common damages in a wrongful death lawsuit are:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of income due to the person’s death
  • Loss of services the person did around the home such as maintenance of the property
  • Loss of companionship and love
  • Loss of consortium by a spouse
  • Loss of guidance and support the decedent supplied

Survival Actions

If the decedent lived for a time prior to death, it is possible to file a survival action. This claim extends beyond the person’s demise and is filed in their stead. It covers hospital expenses the accident incurred and the pain and suffering the decedent suffered.
