Major Intersection Accident Reported in Oakley

One person was hospitalized with serious injuries in a three-car accident in Oakley on Thursday, November 29, 2018. Officers and paramedics responded at 1:55 p.m. and arrived at the accident site, which was located at the intersection of Laurel Road and Empire Avenue. According to Logan Cartwright, an Oakley police Sgt., when emergency responders arrived, they found one man trapped in a vehicle. Paramedics had to use hydraulic tools to free him, and he was then transferred to John Muir Medical Center via helicopter. The extent of his injuries was not specified, but Cartwright said they were not perceived to be life-threatening.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the accident, and Cartwright stated that the weather conditions may or may not have been a contributing factor. He considered the conditions to be “damp” at the time of the collision.

Driving in Hazardous Weather Conditions

Weather-related car accidents in the U.S. cause more deaths annually than large-scale natural disasters such as flooding, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Travelers are faced with various weather hazards every year, such as rain, wet/icy pavements, snow/sleet, snow/slushy pavements, and heavy winds and fog. From late fall to early spring, many of these weather conditions become a reality at roadways all across the United States.

According to The U.S. Department of Transportation, over 5.8 million accidents happened per year based on statistics from 2007 – 2016. About 1.2 million (more than 20 percent) of those accidents involved dangerous weather conditions. In comparison, the 10-year average fatality rate from natural disasters including flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes, lightning, and heat was 379 deaths per year. Below are some tips for staying safe when driving in one of the most common hazardous weather conditions: heavy rain.

  • Take Your Time – Slowing down is the only thing you can do to prevent your car from hydroplaning in heavy rain conditions. It is also important to note that one of the worst times to drive is right after it starts to rain since oils on roadways create slick conditions.
  • Turn On Your Lights – Regardless of what time it is, switch on your lights when it is raining. It helps other drivers see you in the midst of distracting rainfall. Most states require drivers to use their headlights when it rains, even during broad daylight.
  • Give Additional Space to Other Vehicles – Add one to two extra seconds to your following time during rainy conditions, as you will give yourself and other cars more time to react to traffic.
