Major Injuries Reported in Merced Motorcycle Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Merced personal injury lawyer. A motorcyclist was involved in an accident with an ambulance in Merced on the night of Saturday, April 14, 2018. Sadly, the biker suffered severe injuries in the collision. The motorcyclist was traveling westbound along 14th Street in the vicinity of V Street at approximately 7:45 pm. At the same time, an ambulance was going northbound along V Street through the intersection at 14th Street while responding to a medical call. The motorcyclist reportedly struck the side of the ambulance, causing him to suffer significant injuries.

Nature of Injuries

The occupants of the ambulance were uninjured in the accident. Unfortunately, the motorcyclist was transported by another ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries to his arm.

What Caused the Accident?

Authorities have not yet decided a cause of the accident due to pending investigation. It is unknown whether which party had a red light and whether the ambulance had its sirens and emergency lights on while proceeding through the intersection.

Motorcycle Accidents and Injuries

The dangers of riding a motorcycle significantly outweigh those of operating a motor vehicle. Motorcyclists, in particular, have a higher risk of suffering a traumatic injury in an accident due to their lack of protection. Some of the common injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident include:

  • Facial Fractures: This involves a break in one of the several bones of the face which consists of the nasal bone, the orbital bone, the maxillary bone, the frontal bone and the mandible. Those who have suffered this type of fracture often experience symptoms such as pain and tenderness over the fracture site.
  • Spinal Cord Trauma: This type of injury can cause complications in motor and sensory function. The common ways that injuries to the spinal cord can occur is through a motorcycle accident. Symptoms that can manifest following spinal trauma include loss of range of motion, numbness or tingling in the toes or fingers, pain that worsens with movement and loss of sensation in certain parts of the body.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): There are a few different types of TBI that vary in severity and health management, such as a concussion, epidural hematoma, and subdural hematoma.

Suffering any type of injury following a motorcycle accident can be a devastating experience, especially when compounded by high medical bills and lost wages. If you or a loved one has experienced this, it is essential to contact a seasoned personal injury attorney in Merced to explain your rights and put together a strong case for fair restitution.
