Land Rover Discovery SUVs’ Doors at Risk of Opening While Driving

Land Rover has issued a recall for approximately 30,000 Discovery SUVs spanning model years 2017 through 2020 due to a concerning issue: the rear doors have the potential to unexpectedly open while the vehicle is in motion.

What is the Issue?

The root of the problem lies in water leakage affecting a specific portion of the door latch mechanism, leading to gradual failure over time. As a result, the latch may cease to function properly, creating a deceptive impression of the door being securely closed when, in fact, it is not. Disturbingly, there will be no indication on the dashboard to alert drivers of an improperly latched door.

What is the Solution?

To address this safety concern, Land Rover-authorized dealerships will take action by disabling the keyless entry function in affected vehicles. This measure aims to mitigate the risk of doors inadvertently opening during driving situations.

According to documentation submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Land Rover has been made aware of 75 incidents in the United States where doors on these vehicles have opened unexpectedly while in motion. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries have been reported with this recall.

The recall underscores Land Rover’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of its customers. Owners of the affected Discovery SUVs are strongly advised to promptly schedule a visit to their nearest Land Rover dealership to have the necessary adjustments made. By addressing this issue swiftly, drivers can ensure continued safety and peace of mind during their journeys.

The Importance of a Recall

Recalls play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of consumers. They are a vital mechanism for manufacturers to address potential auto defects or issues that could compromise a product’s functionality, reliability, or safety, particularly in the automotive industry. Understanding the importance of recalls is crucial for every vehicle owner. Here are a few key reasons why recalls should never be overlooked:

  • Safety of Drivers and Passengers: Recalls primarily focus on safety concerns that may put drivers, passengers, and pedestrians at risk. By addressing these issues promptly, recalls aim to prevent accidents, injuries, or even fatalities that could result from the identified defects. Ignoring recalls could expose individuals to unnecessary hazards on the road.
  • Maintenance of Vehicle Performance: Defective components or systems can significantly impact a vehicle’s performance, compromising its functionality and reliability. Recalls help rectify these problems, ensuring that the vehicle operates as intended. Resolving recall-related issues can improve overall performance, enhance handling, and maintain the optimal driving experience.
  • Protection of Resale Value: Vehicles with open recalls may experience a decline in resale value due to potential concerns raised by potential buyers. By promptly addressing recalls and ensuring that the necessary repairs or modifications are made, owners can maintain the value of their vehicles and provide assurance to future purchasers.
  • Compliance with Regulations: Recalls are not just recommendations; they are legally mandated by regulatory bodies to safeguard consumer safety. Manufacturers are required to issue recalls promptly and address the identified defects. Complying with recall requirements is essential for manufacturers to fulfill their responsibilities and maintain their reputations.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing that your vehicle is free from known defects and has undergone necessary repairs or modifications provides peace of mind. By staying updated on recalls and taking the appropriate actions, you can drive confidently, knowing that your safety and the safety of others are a top priority.

To ensure your safety and the proper functioning of your vehicle, it is essential to stay informed about recalls. Regularly checking for open recalls, promptly responding to them, and following the manufacturer’s instructions can help maintain a safe and reliable vehicle and protect you and your fellow road users.

Check for a Recall

You can visit the NHTSA’s website to determine if your vehicle is subject to any open recalls. You can quickly discover if any outstanding recalls require attention by inputting your car’s unique 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) on their website.

If no recalls are displayed after entering your VIN, your vehicle has no open recalls. However, since automakers frequently issue recalls, including for older vehicles, we strongly advise checking the website periodically to ensure that your vehicle has not been subject to a newly issued recall. Regularly staying informed about potential recalls is an important proactive measure for maintaining the safety and reliability of your vehicle.
