Intersection Truck Accident in Fresno

I am Ed Smith, a truck accident attorney in Fresno. An accident that took place in Raisin City on Saturday, September 23, sent two people to a medical facility after the pickup they occupied collided with a semi.

Details of the Accident

According to a spokesperson from the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened at about one in the afternoon at the crossroads of West Manning and South Bryan. A pickup driver made what is described as an illegal turn onto North Manning, putting the pickup in the path of a semitruck. The truck driver tried to avoid the pickup as he was approaching the intersection but was unsuccessful.

Injuries in the Truck Accident

As far as is known, the semi driver was uninjured. Two people in the pickup were injured, according to a CHP representative. Both were taken by Skylife Air Ambulance to the community medical center in Fresno, a regional facility. At the current time, there is no word as to the types of injuries the occupants suffered or what their condition is at this time. Their identities have not been detailed.

Accident Investigation

The authorities were still in the process of investigating the accident when this report was written, and no final determination as to cause has been given. However, word was released that the use of drugs and alcohol were not suspected as part of the accident.

Intersection Accidents

Accidents commonly occur at intersections due to several reasons, including recognition errors such as inadequate surveillance or driver error. The latter includes:

  • Speeding
  • Aggressive driving
  • Misjudging the speed of other vehicles
  • Illegal maneuvers
  • Failure to recognize other drivers’ actions

Of 787,236 accidents studied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 6.8 percent of the intersection accidents were caused by illegal maneuvers. In fact, this occurs at intersections four to six times more often than otherwise noted. Drivers 25 to 54 years of age are more likely to perform an illegal maneuver at an intersection.

Truck Accident Victims

Occupants of passenger vehicles are more apt to suffer serious injuries or die after a collision with a truck as compared to truck drivers. This is due to the size and weight of the truck compared with the relatively smaller proportions and poundage of the passenger vehicles. The number of occupants in cars and light trucks who were killed in 2014 were about 21,022, while the number of truckers equaled 657. The number injured in passenger vehicles was 2,074,000 as opposed to 27,000 in large trucks.

Catastrophic Injuries in Passenger Vehicle and Large Truck Accidents

When a passenger vehicle collides with a large truck, the occupants of the smaller, lighter vehicles often suffer traumatic injuries such as:
