Elderly Pedestrian Injured on S.R. 26 in a Hit-and-Run Crash Near Stockton

A hit-and-run crash near Stockton caused injuries to an elderly pedestrian on April 6. The accident happened in Garden Acres around 12:34 p.m. on State Route 26 just east of North Oroville Avenue. Officers with the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the report of an accident.

The driver involved in the crash fled the scene before officers arrived. Information on the extent of injuries to the pedestrian was not released. The CHP traffic accident unit is investigating the incident, and a search is underway for the driver.

Pedestrian safety concerns are growing as accidents involving walkers have increased in recent years. Several factors contribute to this trend, including the rise in the number of vehicles and pedestrians sharing the roadways. The popularity of larger vehicles such as SUVs and pickups complicates matters further; these vehicles not only obstruct the driver’s view of pedestrians but also inflict greater damage in the event of a collision. Additionally, the surge in distracted driving incidents, often due to multitasking behind the wheel, plays a significant role in the escalation of these accidents.

Pedestrian Injury Accidents Again Increasing

The Governor’s Highway Safety Association reported that although pedestrian fatalities decreased during the first part of 2023, the year’s second half showed increased areas along the Sun Belt. This may be due to better weather during these months, so pedestrians are out and about more.

Collection of Evidence to Support a Pedestrian Injury Claim

Our legal team, led by Ed Smith, a Stockton personal injury lawyer, takes immediate action in hit-and-run cases by deploying investigators to gather evidence and witness testimonials. This often includes gathering specific details about the offending vehicle  and driver, such as:

  • Checking surveillance videos from traffic lights, businesses, and homes to see if the accident was captured on tape can provide important information to identify the vehicle and driver.
  • Reviewing the police report for information and accuracy can give us clues as to the make and model of the vehicle.
  • Interviewing witnesses to the hit-and-run crash near Stockton to see if they have information on the vehicle or driver may be helpful.
  • Going to the accident scene to gather evidence, such as paint and dropped auto parts, can help us identify the vehicle’s make and model.
  • Checking nearby auto repair shops to see if a vehicle matching the description and damage was brought in can sometimes locate the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run crash near Stockton.

With this information, our injury attorneys work to build a strong compensation claim for our clients. Among the compensation clients are entitled to recover are their medical bills, wages that were lost from being unable to work and pain and suffering.
