A head injury was reported in a February 9 accident in Carmichael following a two-vehicle collision. The accident occurred between a Toyota Scion and a Honda Civic around 6:08 p.m. at Manzanita Avenue and Auburn Boulevard. The accident is under investigation by the CHP to find out how it occurred.

Head Injury in a Motor Vehicle Crash

Injuries to the brain can be a devastating outcome in a motor vehicle accident. Lacerations to the scalp often bleed profusely and must be treated by a medical professional. Skull fractures usually heal on their own but may injure the brain. Traumatic brain injuries can leave an injured party unable to live the life he or she had before the head injury.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Car accidents are a leading cause of traumatic brain injury. Depending on the severity of the head injury, the individual may be left unconscious for a time. Afterward, they may feel nauseous and dizzy. About 80 percent of all head trauma falls into this category.

Moderate Head Injury

A person who suffers a moderate head injury may be unconscious anywhere from 15 minutes to six hours. They may even go through 24 hours of amnesia. Usually, they remain in the hospital overnight for observation. Many have residual symptoms such as memory loss and difficulty with concentration that can plague them for some time.

Severe Head Injury

A severe head injury can cause longer than six hours of unconsciousness and loss of all memory for more than seven hours. Swelling of the brain is a significant concern because it affects adjacent areas and causes cognitive and physical ability loss.

The brain can be depleted of oxygen as the blood vessels are compressed due to swelling. This can lead to a fatal outcome and requires monitoring of intracranial pressure. Other measures such a sodium chloride restriction, parred down hydration, oxygen, and a ventilator are used.

Blood Clots

Bleeding from intracranial arteries and veins can lead to blood clots. The clots also put pressure on the brain. They can occur in the brain or on its surface. Surgical intervention may be needed.
