Driver Hits Boulder in Out of Control Vehicle on Auburn Folsom Road

An out of control vehicle in Granite Bay on September 13 cost the life of a Sacramento man, age 67. The single-vehicle collision occurred north of Morningside Drive around 1:00 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The driver, in a blue Saturn, was going along Auburn Folsom Road when it veered off, struck a boulder, overturned and stopped on its right side.

No passengers were in the vehicle. The Sacramento man died at the accident scene. Authorities have not ruled out drug or alcohol use as contributing factors in the collision. An investigation is ongoing by the CHP traffic accident unit.

Reasons Drivers Lose Control That Isn’t Their Fault

In some cases, drivers may lose control of their vehicle and not be at fault. For instance, when roads are icy or have standing water, brakes can lock up and cause a driver to skid out of control. Similarly, potholes and road debris can lead to sudden jerks that make it difficult for a driver to maintain control of the vehicle. When lack of proper road maintenance leads to an out of control vehicle accident, the government entity may be held responsible. Since the time limit to file these claims is six months, obtaining help from an injury lawyer may be recommended.

Other common non-driver-related causes of an out of control vehicle involve faulty parts. For example, tires with defective tread or a bad suspension system can make it difficult for drivers to maintain traction in certain conditions. If drivers are not aware of these issues, they may find it difficult to keep their vehicles under control. When auto defects cause an accident, the manufacturer may be held responsible by filing a product liability claim.

Wrongful Death Claims

If it is determined that an outside influence such as roadway negligence or defective auto part caused an out of control vehicle accident, the injured party may be able to recover compensation, including:

  • Cost of the funeral and burial
  • Wages the deceased would have earned until their retirement age
  • Spouse may claim loss of consortium, moral support and affection
  • Children may claim the loss of parental guidance and nurturing
  • Loss of inheritance in some cases
  • Compensation for the loss of household assistance
