Ford Recalls More Ranger Pickups Due to Continued Airbag Issues

Ford Motor Company has recently issued a recall of more than 230,000 Ranger pickup trucks manufactured between the years 2004 to 2006, citing potential installation errors of the Takata passenger airbags. The automaker discovered that the new airbags might not deploy correctly in the event of a crash, posing a significant safety risk to occupants. Even if owners had their passenger airbags replaced previously, they would still need to bring their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealership to have it inspected and, if necessary, replaced.

The Previous Recall

Ford had previously issued a recall to replace defective Takata airbags that had the potential to explode, leading to the ejection of metal fragments toward vehicle occupants. This latest recall has been initiated as the replacements for the faulty airbags may have been installed incorrectly, leaving passengers unprotected in the event of a crash. The faulty airbags caused two fatalities, leading the automaker to advise owners not to drive the affected 2006 Ranger models. Ford sent mobile repair teams to vehicle owners’ homes to replace the defective airbags.

After discovering seven instances of improperly installed inflators, Ford redesigned the airbag installation kits to ensure the new replacement airbag inflators could be installed only in the proper orientation. However, in April 2023, the automaker discovered another instance of a Ranger with an improperly installed airbag and subsequently expanded the recall to include more trucks.

Largest Recall in U.S. History

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has called the Takata recall the “largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history,” with over 42 million vehicles from 34 different brands affected since 2014. Ford’s recall adds 133,392 trucks to the recall issued on February 27, 2023, bringing the total to 231,942 Rangers.

Ford offers free inspections and, if necessary, replacements of improperly installed airbag inflators. Owners can contact Ford at 866-436-7332 or check the NHTSA website to see if their vehicle has an open recall.

According to the automaker, there have been no reported incidents of crashes or injuries associated with this issue.

The Importance of a Vehicle Recall

A vehicle recall is an important safety measure that helps to protect drivers, passengers, and pedestrians from potential harm. When a manufacturer or the NHTSA discovers a defect or safety issue with a vehicle, they may issue a recall. This allows the manufacturer to fix the problem for free, ensuring the vehicle is safe to drive.

By taking advantage of a recall, vehicle owners can prevent car accidents and injuries caused by the defect. It’s important for vehicle owners to be aware of recalls and to take action as soon as possible to ensure the safety of themselves and others on the road.
