Door Latch Issues Prompt Recall for Ford and Lincoln Cars

Ford has issued a recall for more than 45,000 vehicles, including 2015 Fiesta sedans and hatchbacks, 2016 Fusion sedans, and 2016 Lincoln MKZ sedans. The reason behind this recall is a potentially dangerous issue with the doors that may not latch properly, posing a risk of them opening while the vehicle is in motion.

The Recall Scope

The primary concern that prompted this recall is related to high ambient temperatures. Therefore, only vehicles sold or registered in regions with warm climates are affected. These areas encompass 17 states, including California.

This isn’t the first time Ford has faced such a problem. In 2020, the automaker issued two other recalls for similar hot-weather door issues, and they expanded an existing recall due to an increasing number of warranty claims and customer complaints.

Recognizing the Issue

Before a door latch fails completely, there are some telltale signs drivers should be aware of. These include doors becoming increasingly difficult to close, elevated wind noise while driving, and the appearance of “door ajar” warnings on the dashboard. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford has not received reports of any accidents or injuries resulting from this defect.

The Affected Vehicles

The recall covers the following vehicles:

  • Ford Fiestas that were produced from December 5, 2014, to January 30, 2015.
  • Ford Fusions that were manufactured between December 13, 2014, and July 31, 2015.
  • Lincoln MKZs that were manufactured between December 13, 2014, and July 31, 2015.

The Issue

The underlying source of the problem originates from a faulty latch component. Exposure to elevated ambient temperatures may cause this component to fracture, leading to incorrect door sealing.

In response to this safety concern, Ford dealerships will conduct a complimentary replacement of the defective door latches on all four vehicle doors for owners. Reimbursement is possible for those who had previously incurred expenses for this repair before the recall announcement.

Checking for Recalls

As a proactive measure, vehicle owners must verify whether their vehicles have open recalls. The NHTSA’s website offers a convenient tool for checking recall status by inputting your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN). Regularly checking for recalls is advisable because automakers frequently issue recalls, even for older vehicles.
