Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 5 in Redding

A fatal two-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 in Redding claimed the life of a 52-year-old Redding man on Saturday night, March 14, 2026. The collision occurred on the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near the South Bonnyview Road exit, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Crash Details and Sequence of Events

Investigators reported that a 2019 Hyundai, driven by Penny Gardener, 72, was traveling northbound in the center lane at a high rate of speed. At the same time, the victim was driving a 1977 Ford sedan in the right lane.

Authorities say the Hyundai suddenly moved into the right lane and struck the rear of the Ford. The force of the collision pushed both vehicles off the roadway, where they overturned.

Emergency Response and Road Closures

Emergency responders arrived to find both vehicles with major damage. Despite their efforts, the Redding driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials temporarily closed a lane of the freeway while crews worked to assist those involved and clear the wreckage, causing traffic disruptions in the area.

Investigation Ongoing

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact the CHP Redding office to assist with the investigation.
