Authorities said the collision happened just before 9:30 p.m. just south of the South Bonnyview Road exit. Investigators reported that a dark-colored 2019 Hyundai driven by Penny Gardener, 72, was traveling northbound in the center lane of the freeway at a high rate of speed.

At the same time, a 1977 Ford sedan driven by a 52-year-old Redding man was traveling northbound in the right lane. According to investigators, Gardener suddenly moved from the center lane into the right lane and struck the rear of the Ford.
The impact caused both vehicles to leave the roadway and overturn. Authorities confirmed that both vehicles sustained major damage as a result of the crash.

Safety Reminder: Check Lanes Carefully Before Changing
Freeway crashes often occur when drivers change lanes suddenly or fail to check surrounding traffic. Motorists should always signal before merging, check mirrors and blind spots, and avoid excessive speeds that reduce reaction time. Practicing these safe driving habits can help prevent devastating rollover collisions.
