Fatal Chico Area Rollover Accident

Fatal Chico Area Rollover Accident

On Wednesday, August 21, 2019, a rollover accident that took place just outside of Chico left one individual with severe injuries and cost another their life. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers, the accident took place at night and involved a single vehicle. The identity of the decedent is currently being withheld by Butte County officials until her family is properly notified. Additionally, CHP is actively investigating causal factors of this tragic collision.

Crash Information

Officers reported that the accident happened at about 10:50 p.m. A 21-year-old woman had been driving a 2008 Nissan south on River Road at an unknown speed. Reportedly, the vehicle traveled through an intersection while the driver lost control. The Nissan eventually left the roadway, striking an embankment and overturning. Reports indicated that the Nissan rolled until it came to a stop near an orchard.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the crash site right away, and when they arrived, they discovered both the vehicle driver and passenger had been seriously injured. Tragically, medical officials reported that the driver of the vehicle passed away on-scene. The passenger, a 23-year-old Chico woman, was placed on an ambulance and driven to the Enloe Medical Center to receive treatment for major trauma.

Investigation

As CHP continues to investigate this crash, no suspected causal factors have been officially reported. CHP did state that neither of the individuals involved in the accident appeared to have been wearing seat belts when the collision occurred. Anybody who may have information that could help officers with their investigation is encouraged to contact the local CHP office at (530) 392-2800.

What Makes a Rollover Accident Dangerous?

According to the NHTSA, rollovers have a much greater fatality rate than most other types of accidents. While rollovers only account for around two percent of collisions in the country, an overturned vehicle is involved more than a third of fatal accidents. Rollovers can be dangerous for many reasons, but one of the main dangers is crushed roof injuries. Often, vehicle roofs are not strong enough to withstand a rollover and can crumple, leaving occupants trapped or seriously hurt.

When this happens, the companies responsible for manufacturing and selling the vehicle may be liable to pay compensation to accident survivors, decedents, or their families. In many cases, those who’ve been affected by a serious crash are able to recover for a wide variety of damages that can include hospital bills, lost income, emotional suffering, funeral expenses, and more. If you’d like more information about how people can claim payments for accident-related damages, the best thing to do is to speak with an experienced attorney about your situation.
