Driving Tips to Get Better Gas Mileage

Taking good care of your car is essential if you want it to last. One of the things you can do to keep your vehicle in good shape is to make sure it gets a tune-up and oil change regularly. Additionally, you will want to ensure you are getting good gas mileage. Here are some driving tips to help you do that.

Make Sure You Have the Right Tire Pressure

The pressure in your car’s tires may not seem that important, but it definitely matters when it comes to gas mileage. When your tires are underinflated, they don’t move your vehicle forward as easily as they should. That contributes to lower gas mileage. Checking your tires regularly and keeping them at a proper pressure can help avoid that.

Streamline Your Vehicle

Roof racks, car carriers, and related items can make your vehicle far less aerodynamic than it should be. Because of that, you may get poor gas mileage. Taking those things off your car, and putting all your luggage inside the vehicle when you travel, can mean better gas mileage. That will save you money as you drive, and can also be easier on your car, as well.

Replace Your Fuel and Air Filters When Needed

Fuel filters and air filters can both become dirty, and get debris in them. If that happens, your car isn’t going to get the right amount of fuel and air mixture through the engine. That means the vehicle could run poorly, and it could also use more fuel than it should be. If you want good gas mileage, you’ll need to make sure the air and fuel filters get changed when they should.

Use GPS to Stay Out of Traffic Jams

It can be easier said than done to stay out of traffic jams, but when you avoid them as much as possible, you reduce your chances of getting poor gas mileage. Sitting and idling in traffic for a long time is not good for your car’s engine, and it also means you’re using a lot of gasoline even though you aren’t getting very far down the road. You can reduce that problem by using your GPS to find a different route with less traffic.

Practice Steady, Defensive Driving

When you drive carefully, defensively, and steadily, you help keep your car in good shape. You also reduce the amount of gasoline you use, since things like rapid acceleration can use a lot of gas quickly. Taking your time and being safe on the road is not only important to protect you and your car, but it can save you money in fuel, too.
