A tragic head-on collision claimed the life of a 21-year-old Elk Grove driver killed in head-on crash on Highway 99 near Hammatt Ave. early Monday morning, July 21, 2025, on Highway 99. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the scene at approximately 2:12 a.m. after receiving reports of a major crash south of Hammatt Avenue.
Three Vehicles Involved in Fatal Wrong-Way Collision
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a tragic wrong-way collision occurred when a man from Elk Grove, driving a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. He collided head-on with a Toyota Camry driven by a man from San Bernardino, who had been traveling at approximately 65 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
After the initial impact, the Chevrolet veered left and struck the trailer of a big rig in an adjacent lane. The 26-year-old big rig driver was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision. Tragically, the driver of the Chevrolet was pronounced dead at the scene.
Passengers Injured, Others Unharmed
Four passengers in the Chevrolet, ranging in age from 19 to 21, suffered moderate to major injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Fortunately, the drivers of both the Toyota and the big rig were unharmed and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine what caused the driver to enter the wrong side of the freeway. It remains unclear at this time whether drugs, alcohol, or other factors contributed to the collision.
