Emergency responders arrived on scene shortly after and transported one patient to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. CHP officers temporarily closed portions of the freeway while crews cleared the wreckage and investigated the cause of the collision. Authorities are continuing to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash and which driver may have been at fault.

Causes of Multiple-Vehicle Accidents on Highways

Highway driving often involves high speeds, close vehicle spacing, and heavy traffic, all conditions that can contribute to serious crashes. A Dixon multiple-vehicle accident may occur when one driver’s sudden mistake leads to a chain reaction involving several other cars. Some of the most frequent causes include:

  • Speeding and tailgating: Drivers traveling too fast or following too closely have less time to react when traffic slows suddenly.
  • Distracted driving: Using a phone, eating, or adjusting navigation can cause drivers to miss changes in road conditions.
  • Poor weather or visibility: Rain, fog, and glare can reduce traction and sight distance, increasing the likelihood of multi-car collisions.
  • Sudden lane changes or unsafe merging: Quick, un-signaled maneuvers often force other drivers to brake or swerve abruptly.
  • Driver fatigue or impairment: Drowsy or intoxicated drivers are slower to respond to traffic hazards.

Common Injuries in Multiple-Vehicle Crashes

A Dixon multiple-vehicle accident can cause severe injuries because of multiple points of impact and secondary collisions. Common injuries include:

  • Whiplash and soft tissue injuries from the rapid back-and-forth motion of the neck.
  • Fractures in the arms, legs, or ribs from airbag deployment or impact with interior surfaces.
  • Head and brain injuries resulting from hitting windows or steering wheels.
  • Spinal cord injuries may cause partial or total paralysis.
  • Internal injuries to organs caused by seatbelt tension or blunt force trauma.

Those who sustain injuries often experience both physical and emotional trauma, requiring lengthy recovery periods and costly medical care.
