Elderly Bicyclist Seriously Injured

According to information reported by California Highway Patrol (CHP), one person was seriously injured during a vehicle/bicycle accident in Napa County on Thursday, June 27, 2019. Officers indicated that a 72-year-old Calistoga resident was left with severe trauma after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle along a local highway. The man was taken to a local hospital, but updates on his condition have not yet been provided. My thoughts are with the injured man and his family while he is in the process of recovery.

Crash Details

According to police, the accident happened at about 6:30 a.m. The cyclist had been riding alongside Highway 29 to the north of the Duanweal Lane exit. Officers indicated that a 2019 Nissan driven by a 62-year-old Calistoga man approached the cyclist from behind. For reasons that CHP says they do not currently understand, the vehicle entered the path of the cyclist, resulting in a collision. CHP stated that the driver immediately stopped his vehicle and contacted police to report the accident.

Response

CHP rushed emergency officials to the accident site immediately after receiving the call. When emergency staff arrived, they found that the cyclist had been knocked off his bike and suffered severe injuries during the accident. The man was placed on a ground ambulance and driven to the St. Helena Hospital for emergency medical care. The driver of the Nissan did not sustain any injuries during the accident.

Investigation

CHP says that their officers are looking into what factors may have been a part of this collision. While an investigation is ongoing, police have not stated what factors they suspect may have been involved. However, CHP did note that the cyclist had been wearing his helmet when the accident took place.

Recovering from a Cycling Injury

Cyclists do not have the same protection as the occupants of passenger vehicles. Because their bodies aren’t protected by safety features like airbags or shielded by a metal exterior, cyclists are liable to suffer major trauma when they are involved in accidents. These injuries can be difficult to recover from, and survivors often require extensive medical procedures in order to regain their health. While the process of recovering can be both physically painful and emotionally difficult, many people are shocked when they discover how expensive an injury can be as well.

Not only are medical costs steep, but those who have been injured often also need to stop working either temporarily or permanently. For many, this loss of income can mean being unsure of how their family will be able to afford to keep on living their lives. In order to recover for these losses, injured parties can file personal injury claims in order to hold negligent parties liable for the damage they have caused.
