Chico Crash Hospitalizes Young Child

Local authorities stated that a serious car accident happened near Chico on Wednesday, December 12, 2018. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers said that the accident took place during the morning and involved five vehicles including a commercial big-rig. The accident injured four people, one of them a 6-year-old Chico resident. While the three adult drivers involved in the accident only suffered minor injuries, the child reportedly suffered major injuries during the collision. The most recent available updates report that she is still in critical condition at the UC Davis medical center in Sacramento.

Collision Information

Reports stated that the accident happened shortly before 8:00 a.m. when a driver made an unsafe lane change on Highway 99 near Chico. While the driver made the unsafe maneuver, they clipped the side of a Nissan Altima being driven by Megann Pitts, a 33-year-old Chico resident. The Altima was knocked to the side and veered into oncoming traffic, directly into the path of a semi truck and eventually into the path of a fourth vehicle. The crash ultimately involved five vehicles, but further details about the incident are currently unavailable.

Injuries

Pitts was found at the crash scene with minor injuries. However, her daughter had been a passenger in her vehicle and medics reported that the young girl suffered a broken leg and pelvis as well as a head injury. The girl was flown by helicopter to Sacramento for emergency care.

In addition to Pitts and her daughter, the driver of the big rig and a 54-year-old woman from Corning also suffered injuries. The big rig driver was reportedly taken to a local hospital to be given treatment for his injuries.

Investigation

According to traffic information, both north and southbound lanes of Highway 99 were shut down at the crash site for two hours while police investigated the scene and workers cleared away dangerous debris from the road. CHP says that they do not believe driving under the influence to have been a factor in the crash and that all parties had been wearing seatbelts when the accident occurred. However, CHP is still actively investigating the crash.

Calling a Personal Injury Law Firm

Dealing with a serious injury in the family is often very difficult. Parents of injured children are often overwhelmed with worries about their child’s recovery and financial difficulties can make it even harder. Medical bills for accident injuries can be extremely high and many injured people need therapy, medicine, and care in order to recover fully.

These costs should never stand between someone and their health. For this reason, injured parties and their families can often claim compensation from negligent parties after an accident. These payments can cover the cost of medical expenses as well as emotional damages related to the crash. However, if you have a viable personal injury case, you should always speak with an attorney before taking action. Calling a trusted Chico personal injury lawyer ensures that you have the information you need to seek the compensation you deserve.
