On Wednesday, October 24, 2018, authorities of the Butte County Sheriff’s Office identified a man who lost his life in a recent accident that took place near Chico. The man was identified as 28-year-old Daniel Fenker. Authorities noted that Fenker’s driver’s license listed an address in Soquel, a small community located near the city of Santa Cruz. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the crash took place on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, near the Chico Veterans Memorial Hall.

My sincere condolences are extended to Fenker’s loved ones and friends as they mourn their terrible and sudden loss.

Crash Information

The collision reportedly happened on Highway 99 near the exit for Rio Lindo Avenue. Fenker had been traveling southbound in a white-colored pickup truck at around 6:45 a.m. For reasons that remain unknown, Fenker’s vehicle traveled off of the highway. After leaving the road, the pickup struck a nearby embankment and eventually came to a rest behind the veteran’s hall.

Emergency staff who responded to the collision stated that they found Fenker inside his truck at the scene of the crash with severe injuries. Tragically, medics could not treat Fenker’s injuries, and he was declared deceased by officials at the scene of the crash.

Investigation

CHP has stated that their investigators are working to determine the causal factors of this accident. However, CHP has also stated that they do not currently know what circumstances preceded the collision. Officers noted that a second vehicle may have been involved in the collision, but left the site of the wreck.

So far, CHP has not confirmed any suspected collision factors. Factors that are frequently involved in accidents such as this one include defective car parts, medical issues, hazards in the road, roadway defects, and more.

Phantom Vehicles

In some cases, crashes are caused by cars that never even make contact with other vehicles. These types of crashes are called “phantom vehicle” collisions. Phantom vehicle collisions typically happen when drivers operate their vehicles recklessly and force other cars to make dangerous maneuvers. Sometimes, a driver will make a sudden turn in front of another vehicle, forcing the second car to stop suddenly. In other cases, a phantom vehicle will change lanes without any warning, forcing another driver to veer off of the road or into oncoming traffic.

Phantom vehicle accidents are not only dangerous, but they usually leave injured vehicle occupants and/or their families with anxiety over how they will claim recompenses for their losses when there isn’t a negligent driver to hold responsible. However, when a negligent party cannot be held responsible for a crash, people can often claim money from their own insurance policies through what is called “Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage.” However, this type of coverage is not included in every insurance policy and the amount that can be recovered is different for each case.
