Bus Crash Statistics

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, in 2015, buses and big trucks were involved in almost 12 percent of motor vehicle crashes that resulted in fatalities. About 14,000 collisions involving buses that year resulted in injuries. The majority of deaths that occurred involved buses used for transit or by schools, while a lesser number were city transportation buses.

Bus Crash Injuries

Those who are riding in a motor vehicle and bus passengers can suffer serious injuries when in a collision. Some of those injuries include:

  • Head injuries: Head injuries can cause serious damage as it renders the individual unconscious or unable to remember. Many such as concussion will heal with time, but more serious traumatic brain injuries often require surgical intervention.
  • Neck injuries such as cervical strain and sprain (whiplash): Neck injuries to the cervical spine, muscles, and tendons in the neck are a common result of a bus crash. Symptoms may be delayed for hours or days. Some of these types of injuries heal in a matter of weeks. However, others may become a chronic condition that is ongoing for months and cause other symptoms such as a persistent headache.
  • Broken bones: Arm and leg fractures are common in collisions with buses. Some may involve fractures that require surgical intervention. Still, others may involve large joints and cause long-term problems such as pelvic or femur fractures.
  • Back injuries and spinal cord damage: The muscles and bones that make up the spinal column can be fractured. Herniated disks due to the leakage of the donut-shaped disk that cushions the vertebrae from each other occur frequently. In some cases, the spinal cord itself is injured, leading to partial or total paralysis.
  • Abdominal injuries: Blunt abdominal trauma can result in injury to one or more organs. When this happens, internal bleeding can occur and without medical intervention prove deadly.
  • Scars and disfigurement from impact with metal parts of the vehicle: Scarring is a life-changing injury that can result in disfigurement. This may be altered through the use of plastic surgery and carries significant emotional and psychological trauma to an injured individual.
  • Burn injuries if the vehicle catches on fire: Burns is one of the most harrowing types of injury. Depending on the severity of the burn, considerable effort must be made to prevent infection and encourage healing. This can amount to repeated hospital stays and surgeries.
