Big Rig Accident Shuts Down Sacramento Interstate for Hours

Interstate-5 Near Airport Boulevard Shut Down Due to Serious Big Rig Accident

A big rig accident that shut down the interstate and backed up traffic occurred on January 23. The collision occurred along Interstate 5 southbound close to Airport Boulevard at about 3:30 a.m. The crash happened when a big rig struck a sign pole on the freeway head-on.

Traffic Stalled for Hours as Accident Scene is Cleared

The rig caught on fire and was heavily damaged with a complete destruction of the cab, leaving the highway blocked for hours as well as a long backup of traffic. It was expected to take a long time to clear the scene of the debris from the accident. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver suffered major burn injuries and was hospitalized.

The Dangers of Burning Vehicles

Vehicles on fire can present a great danger to both people and property. Vehicle fires are particularly hazardous due to their potential size, speed and location. The very nature of vehicles also makes it difficult for firefighters to quickly reach the source of the fire. Additionally, vehicle fires can involve a range of combustible materials and hazardous fluids that can create toxic fumes and cause secondary fires.

Vehicle fires can be caused by a wide variety of factors, including mechanical problems such as fuel line ruptures, electrical shorts or sparking or other ignition sources. Vehicle fires are also a common occurrence in accidents involving collisions, rollovers, or other impacts.

Burn Injuries in a Traffic Collision

Car or big rig accident burn injuries can be very severe and range from mild to life-threatening. These injuries are typically caused by touching a hot surface, such as an engine or metal parts of the vehicle or by contact with oil, gas, battery acid, electrical energy or chemicals released during the accident. The most common areas affected are arms and legs due to their proximity to involved components in a crash.

The Seriousness of Burn Injuries

Burns can cause intense pain and disfigurement that may require extensive medical treatment, including skin grafts following a big rig accident. Severe burn injuries can also lead to long-term physical disabilities that impact your quality of life. Victims often need psychological counseling and other forms of therapy in addition to traditional medical care.
