Benicia DUI Statistics
Benicia DUI Statistics

I’m Ed Smith, a Benicia car accident lawyer. Some of the most unfortunate and heartbreaking auto accidents involve drunk driving. Such accidents tend to cause innocent victims to suffer serious injuries or even lose their lives as a result of another driver’s negligence. Those who frequently drive on roads in and around the city of Benicia may want to read the following information regarding Benicia DUI statistics.

What is a DUI?

A DUI is a specific criminal offense that involves driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The legal Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limit to operate a motor vehicle in California is 0.08, as stated in Vehicle Code Section 23152 (b). A driver convicted of DUI in an auto accident may face misdemeanor or even felony consequences depending on the severity of the collision.

DUI Overview

Over the eight year period beginning in January 2008 and ending in December 2016, Benicia saw a total of 76 injury-causing auto accidents involving DUI. Of these crashes, 8 involved pedestrians, 2 involved motorcycles, 3 involved bicyclists, and the remaining 63 crashes involved only passenger vehicles or tractor-trailers.

Additionally, approximately half of the injuries caused by drunk driving accidents in Benicia during this time period occurred along state-operated highways within Benicia city limits.

Benicia DUI and Fatalities

One very sobering statistic about DUI in Benicia is the fact that, while DUI accidents account for just above 9 percent of all injury crashes in the city, more than half of fatal car accidents are caused by intoxicated drivers. This data indicates that the risk of being involved in a fatal accident is dramatically increased when drunk drivers are on the road. In fact, it is about 8 times more likely for a Benicia accident to be fatal if DUI is involved.

Since 2008, intoxicated motorists have caused 6 fatal accidents, 6 accidents that involved severe bodily injuries, 35 accidents that involved moderate bodily injuries, and 29 accidents that only involved one or more parties complaining about pain after the crash occurred.

Also, DUIs resulting in fatalities occurred in Benicia slightly more often when compared to Solano County entirely.

Crash Type

The most common type of DUI crash in Benicia involves property damage with fixed objects. Such accidents accounted for nearly 33 percent of all injury-causing DUI accidents and were almost twice as frequent as rollover accidents.

Common DUI Times

In Benicia, statistics show that a drunk driving accident resulting in traumatic consequences is likely to occur on Sundays from midnight to 3:00 a.m. Other dangerous time periods include Friday from 9:00 p.m. to midnight and Saturday from midnight 6:00 a.m.
