Sac Metro Fire emergency responders arrived to examine the vehicle occupants for possible injuries. The extent of those injuries was not reported. The accident is being investigated to determine the cause and assign fault in the collision.

Causes of a Head-On Collision

Driver error is almost always responsible for a head-on collision. Since the impact in a head-on crash is much higher because of the speed of both vehicles, the result is often serious injuries and fatalities. Some of the main reasons a head-on collision occurs include:

  • Going the wrong way on a street or highway: Drunk or elderly drivers usually cause these types of head-on crashes.
  • Distracted drivers: A driver who is texting, changing a radio station, or other activity that takes their eyes off the road can end up unintentionally swerving into an oncoming lane.
  • Improper passing: Passing on a two-lane road may be legal but can be risky. Impatience behind a slow vehicle or passing on a yellow line without a clear view of oncoming vehicles can cause a head-on collision.
  • Drowsy driving: A driver who is sleepy can fall asleep at the wheel or lose their focus, so the vehicle drifts into another lane. In addition, a drowsy driver can suddenly jerk the wheel when they realize what is happening and overcorrect, which places them in an oncoming lane.
  • Drunk drivers: A drunk driver may not only be going in the wrong direction but may have problems staying in their lane, so everyone else on the road is endangered.
  • Making an improper turn at an intersection: A vehicle that makes a risky turn in front of oncoming traffic can end up causing an accident at an intersection.

Injuries From a Head-On Accident

Many serious injuries can result from a head-on collision. Some of the most common are as follows:

  • Traumatic brain injuries: A traumatic brain injury may range from a concussion to permanent damage that can alter the individual’s cognitive function or result in coma and death. More seriously injured survivors may require life-long care.
  • Bone fractures: Broken bones may be simple and heal quickly but can extend to crush injuries or serious fractures where the bone protrudes or is splintered.
  • Abdominal trauma: Abdominal injuries can be especially serious because they can involve organ damage or internal bleeding.
  • Spinal cord damage: Injuries to the spinal cord can cause permanent or temporary paralysis with a loss of sensation and ability to move.
  • Chest trauma: Trauma to the chest can cause a punctured lung or damage to the heart.
  • Amputations: An amputated digit or limb can cause disfigurement and affect an individual’s ability to work.
  • Scarring and disfigurement: Emotionally damaging, scars and disfigurement can affect a person’s ability to earn a living and cause permanent psychological damage.
