Accident on Silverado Trail Kills Angwin Man in Collision With Box Truck

A box truck collision occurred with a pickup north of Napa recently that claimed the life of an Angwin man. The accident happened along Silverado Trail near Oakville Cross Road at about 11:42 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). A Benicia man, 41, was in the big truck and reportedly slowing to make a turn when a Ford Ranger pickup driven by the Angwin man rear-ended the truck. Officials have recently identified the decedent as 83-year-old Colin Albert Erickson of Angwin.

Traffic Rerouted While Police Investigation Is Conducted

The box truck driver and his passenger, also from Benicia, were uninjured in the collision. Silverado Trail was closed in both directions between Skellenger Lane and Oakville Cross Road as an investigation was conducted into the collision and the scene cleared. Area traffic was rerouted to Highway 29 until around 2:00 p.m. The CHP is investigating the collision to determine what happened.

Negligence by a Box Truck Driver That Leads to an Accident

It is not uncommon for truck drivers to cause accidents. Large vehicles are often driven without adequate precautions to ensure the safety of other motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists. The result can be serious injuries or even death.

List of Causes of a Truck Accident

Accidents involving box trucks can be caused by many factors. Among them are:

  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Reckless driving
  • Failure to yield the right of way
  • Making improper turns
  • Running red lights or stop signs
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Box Company Negligence When Renting a Truck to Someone Else

If you’ve been in an accident with a big truck, there’s a chance that the company that rented or leased the vehicle to the driver may be held liable. This is because, in many cases, the truck company has a responsibility to ensure that their vehicles are being driven safely and responsibly. If they fail to do so and an accident occurs, they may be considered negligent.

There are a few different ways that a box truck company may be held liable for an accident:

  • If the company knew or should have known that the driver was not qualified to operate the vehicle safely but still allowed them to do so.
  • If the company failed to properly maintain the vehicle, resulting in mechanical problems that led to the accident.
  • If the company did not perform a proper background check on the driver, it is later discovered that the operator had a history of accidents or moving violations.
