Leg Reconstruction Following a Car Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Car Accident Lawyer. Driving a vehicle carries inherent risks. Among these are chances of serious injuries.  There are some common causes of auto accidents, including:

  • Distracted Driving
  • Drunk Driving
  • Speeding
  • Wet Roads
  • Poor Visibility
  • Equipment Failure

Whenever an auto accident happens, it is crucial to evaluate everyone at the scene for serious injuries. The injuries that people sustain vary in their severity. Some common injuries that might occur in an auto accident include:

  • Bumps, Scrapes, and Bruises
  • Bone Fractures
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Crush Injuries

A medical study looked at serious leg injuries that can occur in T-bone car accidents. When this happens, the occupant can have his or her leg pinned between the door and the interior of the vehicle. This can create a severe crush injury that can have long-term impacts on the individual’s quality of life. This study discussed a treatment method that has yielded positive outcomes for the injured person.

Leg Reconstruction: Microvascular Flaps

When someone is involved in a high-impact collision, crush injuries can occur. A crush injury leads to catastrophic impacts for the affected body part. Bones can be destroyed, connective tissue can be severed, and the blood vessels are compressed. This can have serious medical implications. It can be difficult to reconstruct a limb that has been crushed, and many people have long-term functional use deficits that can impact their quality of life.

The study, published in the Plastic Reconstruction Journal, discussed the critical role that a microvascular surgeon plays in a reconstruction of catastrophic leg injuries. The research proposed that complete rebuilding of small blood vessels, using flaps and skin grafts, could lead to an improved functional outcome. Based on the results of the study, individuals who had microvascular flap reconstruction within seven days of their injury had a significantly lower rate of complications than those who did not. Common complications following these injuries include skin graft loss and infection. Many of the individuals in the study achieved a full recovery with a return to baseline functioning.
